Replies to Views ratio

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: compukeith

This is just a general observation I've made that i am bored enough to make a thread of.

I've noticed that generally, although there are some exceptions such as the Random Image Thread or the Word Association Thread, that there is about a 1:10 ration between people replying to the threads and people who are looking at them.

Just an observation by a very bored compukeith.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

yeah, most people like to look but not touch

Besides, a lot of guests to the site also view it, but can't reply since they need to register first - most people don't take the time unless they have something they need to post like a support question...

Hi

Posted by: chaosisreality

Like I decided to reply, throwing off your ratio.

Posted by: compukeith

Damn you!

Posted by: chaosisreality

A thread like this will attract assh-- I mean, kind gentlemen who wish to derail your theory. Anyway, how many views was this?

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

I wld say ist cuz of the "click here to view new posts". Most ppl just go there directly and ignore other threads that dont appear there. Pluse Batman's a Pimp (unrealted thought )

Posted by: compukeith

Okay, I'm going to add this thread to the list of exceptions since this isn't following the theory at all.

By the way, Dammit!

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

Argh me and my spelling, now i'm wishing i'd gone to school

Posted by: redwench

lots of people check the replies as they get posted. its not unusual to view a thread 8 times, but only post once.

I actually have the first link in my "Links" bar in IE set to get the newest posts so I don't have to go to the main page, then go to the forums and then view the newest threads. I'm just really lazy.

Or maybe some people just get so bored that they like to hit "refresh" a dozen times on their browsers.

Posted by: laborat

So it's come to this? online angst over post and view ratios? some people would do anything to bring math into an ordinary conversation.
maybe it's because numbers are numbers and words have a lot of different meanings. My own theory is that several peeps in the rest of the world are learning English on this site by trying to figure out what certain unnamed posters on this board are saying. all I can say to that is I fear for the future of civilization.

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

never seen any posts in the rants and raves section. hmm...

Try reading the sticky thread there.

Posted by: BooRadley

Oddly, I've noticed this same ratio on two other forums I post on, and they're neither even remotely tech related. My running theory is that it has to do with the introverted nature of the average net.junkie.

Like the Internet is 9 tenths shy nerds and 1 tenth attention whores. Something like that, at least.

Posted by: Bunmiadefisayo

No such thing as 'nerds'. Really, that is non-existant. And i read the Rant and Rave rules and i have to say that they ironically go against what the Froum stands for. Your supposed to be able to say what u want but the rules there dont allow that so the purpose is defeated.

A thread about reading threads.... what has the world come to?

I think you have misinterpreted what R&R is for, and what free speech means ... having the freedom to say anything doesn't mean you cuss or insult the first person you meet, or shout obscenities for no good reason except to show that you have the "freedom" to do so...

The rules for R&R are pretty simple to follow and should be no problem for anyone who is not out to insult people or engage in illegal activities. If you feel that rules forbidding anyone to "attack fellow members" or "promote discussions about racism, bigotism, or pornography" or even "swearing and namecalling" are against what R&R stands for, then I invite you to enlighten me on what it should stand for

whats wrong with discussions about racism/bigotry/pornography?

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Promoting them is the thing that is not allowed ... besides, if you wanted to talk about those things passionately, a tech site is hardly the place you'd go to discuss them...

yuk yuk yuk these are issues most ppl wouldnt talk about here anyway. I havent seen any thread since joinig that was considered wrong. i cld start one tho ...just kidding.

The first thing i will say here is that you are trying to do the impossible here just like the weather forcast predictions, or predicting the stocks and share, or even predicting the lottery, this is a very impossible thing and i tell you it cannot be done.

In the case you suggest there may be type of pattern but try to fill the gaps in the pattern that is impossible, you have only found about maybe 10 percent or less of the actuall pattern

Also what is the point of this anyway, this is not related to computer at all, more like science.

And another reason why there is more people reading the questions and not answering, this is what i do i go through nearly all of them and read them then i select the ones i want to answer, or the ones that i can help with or suggest, i also just put my opinion there as long as it is based on the subject.

Regards

Andrew

Weather forcasts aren't impossible. Long-range forcasts are.

Dude, that's why it's in the "General and Off Topic" section.

Well, this has certainly gotten more attention that I initially hoped for...

I think it's time to close this thread and move on

Posted by: BooRadley

On the other forum I currently post on that shows thos stats it's currently, for the first page in the general forum,, at 11.8% for posts/views. It's about the same ration I've noticed in that past, roughly 1 to 10.

I thought I was the only person who noticed that kind of stuff.

NO WAY!!

Posted by: laborat

one has to understand the motivation behind techies who have to talk about SOMETHING all day on the phone and in these forums when confronted with a situation where they can talk on and on about NOTHING...it's irresistable. Post to View Ratios is a perfect example.

Posted by: compukeith

Thanks laborat. I totally agree. I am starting to get sick of talking to people - and i've only been in techsupport for 7 months.

I did tech support for two years and change, and by the time I was done, there were only about 4 people on the planet that I could stomache talking to. It's an extremely unhealthy profession. It should be mandatory that you get danger pay and free weekly therapy if you do phone support for the general public.
