Power Supply Requirements

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a situation. I bought one of those Powmax cases with the 400W power supplies. When I leave the side cover on it, it mysteriously shuts down after about 20 minutes.. no warning.. CLICK-gone. To be able to turn the machine back on, I need to disconnect the ATX power cable from the motherboard, and re-connect it, and let WHATEVER it is, cool down, and then turn it back on with the side cover off, and possibly a fan blowing into the case.

I immediately think it's power supply related. Why?-
None of my hard drives are hot.
My CPU is at normal temperature.
Few other small details that seem very similar to the above.

I feel that if I possibly had a different make of power supply, then it might stop doing this.-again, not sure.

Here's my system specs:

AMD XP2100 (1700MHz) w/CoolMaster sync
768MB DDR Ram
ECS K7S5A Motherboard
20GB WD 7200
40GB WD 7200
60GB Seagate 7200
120GB WD 7200
120GB Maxtor 7200
Lite-On 48x12x48
Samsung 52xDVD
GeforceFX 5200 128MB DDR
SB Audigy
Maxtor UltraATA100 IDE dual channel Card
Cheapie USB 4-port card
Typical Floppy
2 system fans. 1 back of case, one in front of stack of harddrives in front.

Midstory: It did this before I put in the 2nd 120GB the GeforceFX, the Audigy, and DVD.

Remember. Side-panel of case on - Bad. Side Panel removed - Good.

Any ideas?

Thank you much,

Chris

And what temp would that be? Also what's your case temp.? Post what they are when the case is open and when it is closed.

well, its definitely heat related. which means its unlikely to be the power supply, at least an improperly behaving one. you simply don't have enough cooling in your case.
all those drives are churning out heat, and you only have the standard case fans. thats not going to work. if noise is of concern, get stealth fans. they are pricier.
ok, youre going to measure the size of the fans you have, the openings, and the spots for your brand new fans. figure out what size you have, and what sizes (yes, a case can have multiple sized openings) you can use. then head to a site with a large selection of fans, like www.coolermaster.com , and look to maximize your airflow. try to make front fans intake, and balance the rest. temp controlled is a good idea, but the cfm is what you want. quite frankly, youre going to end up with a jet engine to cool down that case :P
