Compaq problems

Please help - Compaq Tech Support sure won't. I have an old Compaq Presario Model 5900T desktop that I'm trying to sell. It has Win 98, 20GB HD, 733mHz Pentium III processor and 382 mb memory. The problem is that, once I turn the thing on, it gets past loading Windows then shuts down. I've replaced te power supply, so that's not the problem.

Do I need a new motherboard? And if so, what can I put in that won't cost me the $200 Compaq wants for theirs? I'm told it's a proprietary system.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Try formatting and reinstalling windows, if it was hardware related, then it would probably go off at random or early on.

Thanx Ed - tried that already (shoulda said that in the post) when it would stay on longer, but as time went on, the operational time got worse and worse. And it NOW keeps shutting down right after Windows loads. At this time, I can't even get the damn thing to function long enough to load software.

Any other helpful tips?

Can you get to a DOS prompt? Press F8 and choose command prompt. If you can and it will stay on long enough, try running scan disk.
