PC + Airport Extreme Problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, I am having trouble setting up an Airport Extreme Base Station to a working PC Tower (non wireles with Windows XP Professional) to a new wireless Powerbook G4 with a cable modem via COmcast High speed Internet:

The Comcast Surfboard SB3100 modem works fine. The Airport Setup Assistant worked fine and I can successfully connect to the Internet wirelessly on the Powerbook.

All cables and ethernet sockets work fine on PC and modem.

However, the PC does not connect properly when the ethernet is connected to the Airport LAN and PC (The Modem is connected to the Airport WAN correctly). I have called Apple + Comcast and noone can figure it out.

My PC Ethernet card (Non-wireless) is 'Netgear FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adaptor (NGRPCI)' and works well with the cable modem and PC only.

Please help! I spent the entire weekend trying to fix this.

Do I have to set up a network?

Apple walked me through all the tests to see if the DHCP settings were OK and they were.

The Apple guy thinks it's a software problem from PC to Airport Extreme base station.

I have been reading help sites about sharing internet and Xp and am very confuced.

Appreciate any ideas.

Thank you, JO

no wonder. CPU's become EXTREMELY SLOW if you put new software on it.

Upgrading does not have any affect on processer speed at all, and I assume that you actually ment computer instead of CPU since a CPU is only the chip that makes calculations and could care less what software it is making the calculations for. However, all of this is beside the point because the question is with Networking, not performance.

The most likely cause of othe problem is the inherent incompatibility between MS and Mac networks. The problem is that each uses a different protocal or comminication scheme to transfer data across a network. The problem here is that Apple has made some attempt to make their laptops work on PC networks while MS has made not attempt to make their software work using Apple infastrcuture. I am not increadably fammilier with Apple so please bear with me. Check on Apple's website to see if they have any software that is designed to make a PC work with their networks. If so, try installing that and see what happens.

I thought that the Apple Airport series was wireless only. If this is the case, you might be trying to plug your PC into the outside data port or the port that is designed to connect your wireless access point with either the LAN or your modem. If this is the case, try to find another port, which will probably have a number on it. If there is another port, plug your PC into there and try that. Abother possibility is that you in fact have a wireless access point and not a router. The difference between the two is simple. An access point connects wireless to wired, and a router contorls and directs network traffic, serving as the central connection for your network. If you do not have a router, you will need to purchase and configure one so that you may share your connection with all of your computers. Another distinct possibility is that you are using a crossover ethernet cable. If you are, this will most likely be indicated in small black print that repeats along the duration of the cable. If you are not sure if you hacve a crossover cable, then go to your local computer shop and pick up a standard Cat-5 cable to connect your computer to your Airport.

The final possibility is old drivers for your network card. In order to remedy this, go to netgear's site and download the latest dirvers for your card. Install those and attempt a network connection. You should also try the auto network wizard to determine the correct settings.

If none of these possible solutions work, ,then contact netgear support to see if it is a problem with your network card. As a side note, comcast will not be helpful because they do not want you to share your connection.

check your PC's NIC speed. I had to bring my down to 10mbits. Go into Network settings and into the NIC config section and try changing the speed of the connection.

Im using my new iBook and a Linksys base BTW.

Arturo and Louis,

Thank you for the help. My cables are green and do have repetitive wriing in black on them. They do not say 'crossover'.

One says: Enhanced 350 MHZ Patch Cord Cat 5 (etc).

The other says: Belkin COmponents Fast Cat 5e Premium Patch (etc).

I tried to download and use the Apple Airport Admin Utility but there are no instructions, not sure if I should use it on the PC. Will look for another such thing.

I'm still trying. I may take the Airport back to the Appl store to see if they will take it back, but the time is about 2 months since i bought it.

Would a regular PC router work? I don't have anything else connected to the Airport and PC, do I need a router anyway?

Thanks,
JO

But did you lower the NIC's speed?

Also I think your going to be SOL with bringing the router back, I think you only have 14 days for return. To answer your other question yes a PC router will work. I am using the Linksys Wireless G 4 port router. It works fine for 802.11B and 802.11G and it has wireless. I bought mine for $79 you can get for about about $89 with a $10 rebate. But I would seriously look at the airport Support page's if you cannot return it, maybe theres someting wrong with it (defective).

The NIC speed seems to change automatically when the Airport is connected down to 10 Mbps.

Still trying...I think it's something to do with coordinating the PC IP address and Airport Extreme. I tried the Apple Airport Extreme Utility for PC last night and there are no instructions. I am not sure what numbers/names to put in as I don't want to mess up my cable connection in the PC.

Thanks a lot for the help.
