How can I uninstall directx9

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Having a problem with directx9 and older display card.

A help file states that if problems occur then install directx 8.1

The problem is when I try to install an earlier version of directx is a message saying a later version of directx was found and won't install the earlier version.

How in the heck do you uninstall directx?

Thanks for the reply and link.

I didn't mention that windows 98 se is installed
I checked out the link you provided and found that the directx9 uninstall program doesn't apply to windows 98 se. hmmm...interesting.

I checked out other sites and found no uninstall programs for directx.

One site stated that I wont be able to unistall directx.

Tell me that I wont have to reformat my drive...again.

Hello

You cannot uninstall direct x 9, if you are running windows xp, this is what you should do, this applies to windows me, and windows 98.

Get you windows disk out and copy windows over the windows you have, but in windows xp, start the setup from the cd when you turn computer on, then go through the setup as if you are installing from scratch then select re copy across windows, Choose the repair windows one, by recopying the files across and attempt to repair the operating system.DO NOT SELECT INSTALL FRESH COPY OF WINDOWS, DOING SO, will remove all your programs and settings. After you have done that in windows xp then you will then have direct x 8 there, and in windows me and 98, you will have direct x 8 if you reinstall windows over windows.

Regards

Andrew

Andrew, thanks.

A little confused. My windows 98 se disk has directx5 not 8. If I reinstall the windows 98se, it will overwrite the directx 9 and install directx5 ?

Hello

Sorry to confuse you there, i am ok at doing things but to expalin how i did it, is where i get stuck sometimes, anyway, what i meant was to install over windows, then upgrade the direct x to version 8, either by downloading version 8 from microsoft.

I have supplied a link to make it easier to download the version you require. which is direct x 8.1 for windows 98

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en

I hope this helps

Your the man!

Thanks!

By the way, is there a draw back when reinstalling an os over a clean install?

Posted by: Andrew7689

Hello

Well i don't know as any drawback, but you may need to defrag your harddisk afterwords. But other than that you should be ok, i am always reinstalling mine, even though mine is windows xp, i uesed to have windows 98, and i sometimes had to reinstall over it, but not that often, maybe once in 3 months if that.

Regards

Andrew
