Compatibility prob??!! HELP!!!

Hi!

First time here and I already have a massive tech question. I really hope there is someone that can tell me what´s wrong with my computer.

Since I bought and built my new computer it has constantly crashed, BSOD, desktop and restarting with multiple severe damages to registry entries and stored files. I use WinXP pro and Microsofts help only tells me it is a driver problem. The crashes happens all the time when I play any game (except XIII), sometimes while surfing the internet and sometimes when opening large movie files directly from explorer to Win Media Player.

I have found thousands of other people having the same problems as I do and I have tried a lot of their fixes. Since I think it has to do with my GPU it seems I have done all I can to fix that. This includes:

Turning off settings in BIOS as shadowcaheing, BIOS cache, Power management, disabling USB since IRQ was at the same channel as GPU and more...

Turning off AGP fastwrite, write combining, power settings in XP, I can´t remember exactly all but some more settings was fixed also.

I have installed more fans since GPU temp is around 70+ degrees when benchmarking with 3dmark, CPU is around 65+ degrees while working 100%, Northbridge is around 60 Degrees also.

The last thing helped me a lot. But I still get the crashes occasionally and now it says the [gamename].exe caused the crash. Before that it was i.e. Nv4_disp.dll,win32k.sys, Ulata.sys, IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and so on....

One thing I would like to know (except anything anyone knows about what I mentioned above) is if my hardware is compatible with each other. My config is like this:

Dx9.0b
Nvidia Forceware 53.03
All other updated drivers for hardware and BIOS

MSI ATX 865PE P4 478 GbitLAN USB2/FW SATA RAID AGP8x DDR
512MB DDR DIMM PC3200 400MHz Major/3rd (x2)
Winfast Leadtek GeForceFX 5900 Ultra 256MB AGP8x DVI ViVo
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB SATA 150
Nec ND-1300 DVD+-RW IDE
LG DVD/CD-RW Combo IDE
Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT 800MHz 512kB Socket 478 w/fan
400 W PSU two fans

1 x 12" Fan
1 x 8" Fan
PCU Fan
Northbridge Fan

I also tried to change the fans on my GPU to a Zalman heatpipe but the heat just went to the rest of the computer. Since Winfast GPU is encased I changed back to that config. The problem now is that when I watch TV all the midtones is burnt out blue????!!! Have I shortcircuited something with the cooler paste????!?!

Please help me, I have tried for three whole weeks with minimal sleep. I would be eternally grateful for any kind of answer that could telieve me of my burden.

Thx

Well, I don't know much about the hardware stuff, but to me, that seems like a pretty small power supply for that much hardware. I'd suggest looking into getting a more powerful one - possible 500+ watts.

As for the blue, I had that same problem when playing AVI files in WinAmp. I could play it correctly in Windows Media Player though. I suggest updating your codecs.

Thanx for the fast reply, I´ll consider your recommendation. I was recommended to have at least 380+ watts. Can this really cause a lot of blues?

Yeah - often a small power supply can cause a lot of problems - the hardware just doesn't get the power that it needs to operate correctly.

Welcome to OTS.

Cousin has the same problem with a cd rom driver ......cause days of head aches

Try This, disconnect everything not needed to boot...cdroms/floppys and such then delete them from device manager is it starts running fine then everything hooked up is not the problem, shutdown, then hook up everything one by one booting after hooking up each item till the computer starts running crappy. When it does. It is the last thing you hooked up. Disconnected it and reboot again and see how it runs.

If is is a driver isssure this will tell you by process if elemnation which one it is. Also if this dont fully solve the problem it could very well be a Heat (with that many fans, i doubt it unless there not running right.)or PS issue

DING DING DING DING

you have a major heat problem, and it appears to be all across the board. go here and read their instructions for mounting a heatsink to a cpu. if you didnt do that, go back and do it again. stick the zalman back on the gpu, and add a couple case fans, or vent the zalman directly out.

Hello

You have 512 meg x2, are these at pc3200 and are they the same make, like one is panasonic, and the other is sony, they should all be sony for maximum reliability, otherwise thats why you are getting thses problems, the reason i know this is because i got different brands of memory in my computer and if i run my memory at 400 mhz bus speed then windows does exactly what yours does, my board has a compatibility function on it, and the bus speed then runs at 320 mhz, try that.

By the way in my computer i am using a 200 continus power supply, as long as on the 12 volt side it has loads of current like 18 amps then you should be ok.

On some of these 500 watt power supplies there only give out more power in the 3.3 volt and 5 volt section but not the 12 volt section, which the 12 volt one is important, especially if you have loads of hard disks attached, they take a lot of power on the 12 volt side as well as the cpu.

Regards

Andrew

Try heatsinking the southbridge. It's worth a try.
