y friend gave me a hard drive he was going to toss. It's a maxtor 40 gb 7200 rpm. I formatted the drive and loaded windows 98se on it. I am noticing a really really slow performance. Its is on a machine with 128 mb ram and p4 1.4 ghz. What could be the problem? I noticed it took a long time to format (Two days to be exact). Any help?

2 DAYS to format ?
If it was throwing 'Bad Blocks' then it's had it.
If not, I guess it's possible that the MBd. is 'too fast' for the drive ???
(it should be possible to check the drive Mfg. specs against the BIOS settings wrt 'Mode' and 'UDMA' 33/66/100 etc).

sounds like the drive has some serious problems. If it takes 2 days to format, there's seriously a big issue with it. I'd check maxtors website for you, but it doesn't seem to be working right now. So whenever you get a chance hop onto www.maxtor.com and see if you can find out anything about the problem.

I probably have the same HD in about the same system and it takes about 10 minutes to format. But 2 days suggests huge problems... Also I don't think the UDMA speed is the problem, cause the drive should be able to handle that if it's the same as mine. Maybe there is still some warranty on it because it doesn't sound that it is an extremely old drive...

At the least try to contact Maxtor
