Keyboard doesn't respond

Hello there,
I have Toshiba Satellite 2800 laptop that I have inherited from a friend. It powers on, gets into Windows 98, the mouse works but the keyboard doesn't respond. I connected an external keyboard, yet no change. Would anyone know what could be the problem? Is this a problem with a motherboard?
Thank you in advance.
Andrei

About the only thing I can think of is yoiu have a key 'stuck down' ..
the default BIOS setting is usually 'stop on all erropr except keyboard' - (so a stuck key might not be seen) ... do you see the 3 lamps (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock) 'flash' @ power-on ?

Thank you, Steve.
I think you were correct. Upon booting up, the computer made a number of beeps perhaps for 5-10 seconds. I randomly kept pressing different keys, and found one that stopped the beeping. But now I discovered a different problem. Letters r,f,v,t,g,b, don't respond. Is this a keyboard issue?

More than likely, yes.
