Windows XP Taskbar Disappearing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This tends to happen when I come off from standby, but also when bad things happen (i.e., abnormal program shutdown)

The Windows taskbar is gone. It's not hidden, it's GONE. This is very annoying

It reappears when I restart the laptop, but I'd like to find out how I can start it up again without having to do that as it takes ages. Better still, how to avoid it from happening in the first place

Sounds like explorer.exe shutdown. To restart it, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the task manager. Then go to File -> Run. Type Explorer and press enter. Voila! Some of the icons in the system tray might be gone, but they'll reappear when you restart.

To make this stop happening, try doing Windows Update. There might be an update that you haven't installed yet. Also, try running scan disk to check for disk problems. Lastly, if you have Norton System Works, run One Button Checkup to check for registry, and other problems.
