I somehow have a new director and files from "internet Optimizer". It has a virus. My virus checker finds it but is unable to delete it. When I try to remove it via remove software/hardware, it tells me it isn't there. When I go to windows explorer the program is there with an .exe file. If I try to delete it , it sayd access denied. If I go to command prompt and try to del, acces denied. If I use the attrib command - no good. I tried the Windows explorer t- right click to change to shared - not luck.

Run msconfig and see it something is running that is related to the virus and shut it down and then try to delete it. If that fails you might be able to boot into safe mode and delete it from there.

What's the virus called? Does your virus scan tell you? We could do some research on it.

It's probably in use, so you'd have to boot in safe mode or from a floppy or CD.

Thank You all. I ran the msconfig, and then went to a diagnostic mode.
I had renamed the infected file to sh&&.xxx . I was ten able to delete the file and all of the associated directories.
I am not sure what I was doing on the web to cause this, but I also wound up with lots of "adult sites" in my favorites.
Cleaning up all of that, also.
Again, thanks to you all.

Sounds like you ran into some adware and spyware. I'd recommend downloading Spybot Search and Destroy. You might be surprised how many spyware and adware-related program that have been automatically installed. Some websites download software to your computer without your knowledge and can cause the kinds of issues you described.

I would aslo recommend you run another virus check. You can never be too sure if you deleted all the infected files.
