reformat computer

I want to clean out computer and reformat but when I put in disc It wont remove the XP operating system.
Is there a easy way to do this I am not that computer literate?
I did it once and all it did was put ina partition which I dont want at all. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Put in the XP disc and restart your computer. XP setup should start.
