ipop3d and imapd

Hello all! I'm not sure if this is the right place to be posting my first question or not, but it works for me.. soooo here it is.

I'm running a multi-function server. OS is RedHat 8.0 "out-of-the-box"
All packages are installed, an the firewall is disabled (a router takes care of that). I'm trying to set it, so that my staff can check thier email via pop3 or via imap, however when the servers run, the ports are not mapped, and opened to outside connections. While not a total networking newbie, I am new to setting up pop and imap servers. If anybody has any experience or has heard this question before and has a possible solution, any help would be appreciated

does everybody have an account on the machine? I assume you have a mail exchanger running ? (sendmail, qmail, etc.)
make sure that you enabled the imap and pop deamons to run on start up. from a console type "top or ps -ax" and look for the pop and imap processes. try telneting into the ports and see if you get a connection refused. telnet localhost:25 or telnet localhost:110. if you get connection refused or something then its either not running or not configured correctly.
