You're behind one or more firewalls that are preventing people from joining. Most likely the router's NAT firewall is causing the problem. NAT (Network Address Translation) is a technology that allows all of the computers hooked up the router to communicate with computers on the Internet, even though to those computers you appear to have one IP address, the IP address that your ISP gave you (an IP address is a unique identifier for a computer on a TCP/IP network, which is what the Internet is). Each of the computers on your network (the one created by the router) has its own IP address, and you need to forward incoming data on port 6112, TCP to your computer's (the hosting computer's) IP address. If you don't forward port 6112, connections on it will automatically be blocked by the NAT firewall. Every program that connects to the Internet uses a TCP/IP port, and Warcraft III uses port 6112 by default (I'm assuming that you're using it).
To forward port 6112, you need to get into your router's settings. You do this by typing the router's IP address into your web browser's address bar and then in most cases, enter a username and password for access. Linksys routers have an IP address of http://192.168.1.1 by default, and the default username and password is the word "admin" (without the quotes). Once you've gotten into your router's settings, click the Advanced tab (link), then click the Forwarding tab. In the first set of boxes, fill in the following information:
Port range: 6112-6112
Protocol type: TCP
IP address: your IP address
Make sure that you check the box labeled "Enable" if there is one, otherwise the port forwarding won't work.
To find out what your IP address is, follow these steps:
a. Click Start
b. Click Run
c. Type "command" without the quotes if you're using Windows 95, 98 or Me, type "cmd" without the quotes if you're using Windows 2000 or XP
d. Click OK
e. At the command prompt, type "ipconfig" without the quotes and hit Enter
f. Your computer's IP address will be listed
Once you've filled in all of the appropriate information in the port forwarding settings, click the Apply button and then try hosting again. Make sure that Warcraft III is using port 6112 in its Game Options.
If forwarding port 6112 doesn't work, something else is preventing people from joining. If you're using Windows XP, disable the built-in firewall. Click Start, click Settings, click Network Connections, right-click on your connection and click Properties, then click the Advanced tab and uncheck the box next to the Internet Connection Firewall description if it's checked.
If you have Windows XP and you've disabled the built-in firewall, you're forwarding port 6112 and hosting still doesn't work, check to see that your software firewall (such as ZoneAlarm), if you have one installed, is configured to allow incoming data for Warcraft III. Also, if you have a broadband modem that has a built-in firewall and/or performs NAT, you need to open port 6112 for incoming data in the firewall and/or forward port 6112 to your router.
