what is a proxy and what is its use

A proxy is a piece of hardware that all traffic goes through to the outside world. It is usually used to cache sites for quicker access later. For instance, my high school has a proxy that all internet traffic goes through. This enables the admin to set permissions so students can't just go anywhere they want. The proxy is usually entered into the internet settings (Open IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Settings (if you're using a modem) or LAN Settings (if not using a modem).
