Setting text zoom in Netscape 7.1

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: uh...ok

With IE I've always been able to set the view font to whatever size I want, and have that setting stick.

I recently installed Netscape 7.1 and haven't been able to make the Text Zoom stay at 120% instead of its default 100%. I've bummed around the Prefs for awhile without much luck, and Googling for a problem as specific as this (with very common keywords) is a pain (I've tried, nonetheless, though without success).

Does anyone know how to make the view settings stick?

Thanks.

This tip is for Mozilla, but should be valid for Netscape 7 also:

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I have seen a couple sites that suggest that as a solution and have tried it. The problem with that is that it only selectively enlarges certain portions of text, rather than enlarging all the text in a page itself. The difference? Well you can see for yourself.

Here's a screenshot of text zoom at default 100% - it's practically unreadable.

And here's a screenshot of text zoom at 100%, with minimum font size set to 12.

In the first shot, the text in the entire page actually in proportion with itself, whereas the second one, because of the minimum font requirements, only a selection of text gets modified. Which results in disproportionate and visually unappealing pages.

With IE I've never had this problem - though it had less selection with font size (Smallest, Small, Medium, Large, Largest, vs different % numbers in Netscape), at least it retained the proportionality of pages' text.

While this seems to be no big deal, finding myself having to change the zoom *every time* I load up Netscape in order to read anything without straining my eyes is a royal pain in the butt.

On a side note, I think it's rather a bit of a copout to just say that "Text zoom (View | Text Zoom) is meant for temporary fix for pages with text too large or too small."

I like text zoom because I'm used to working on 1600x1200 resolution. Because of this, the text in almost ALL web pages show up too small. And the solution they offer does not increase the text size of everything to proportion - it simply makes unreadable pages more readable at the cost of visual appearance. Despite the fact that there already exists a solution that allows the best of both worlds - with the catch that you have to set it EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Supposedly this is a common complaint too - I'm surprised that neither Netscape nor Mozilla has addressed this problem, and instead just brushed it aside.

You could set your mouse wheel to make text larger or smaller; preferences>advanced>mouse wheel.

Great idea, though it totally destroys scrolling capability. Of the two conveniences I'm forced to pick scrolling.

Thanks for the great suggestions though.

This thread may be of help:

If you use Firebird, there is an extension called textzoom (or similar) that might do what you want.

Ctrl+ and Ctrl- make zooming/unzooming fairly easy.

er....youhawk, why do you have difficulty reading it at 100? that screenshot is perfectly clear to me.

Red, try reading it with the monitor about 2-3 feet away from you - that's about the distance I normally sit away from it.

Yes, it's readable - but doing so for more than 10 seconds probably ends up straining my eyes too much. It's just a lot more comfortable reading the text at 120%.

You could install the prefbar and customize it with buttons for change font size:

Speaking of extensions, TBE is one of my favorites:

I found this thread by doing a search for enlarging the text in Netscape 7.1. Anyway, after reading I tried something myself and it seemed to work well. In the Netscape prefs EDIT > PREFERENCES click "Appearance" then "Fonts" on the far right side there is an option to set the "minimum font size" click that and set it as high as you can. I have it set to 18 and it works well on my 21" Dell Monitor with me sitting 2 - 3 feet away. Hope that helps...
