IS Normal that the multiplayer begin without asking the number of players?

The problem is the next, i installed diablo 2 LOD and conected with my friend in another computer, and when i start the multiplayer, it begins like a single player, asking for my character and nothing else, there no friend in mi Pc or other thing, i read the other documents about the lan problems, but this problem seem to be diferent, my icp/ip is well conected so the problem is in Diablo ???
