i have cs retail what is half life for, do i need it to play?

No you don't need Half-Life. The retail version of Counter-Strike is a stand alone version.

If you get messages about not having maps its probably some of the older ones that got cut out or custom ones in which case it should automatically download for you when you join the server. Some servers might have this ability turned off and just search google for mapname.bsp .

Here I found the missing map pack for CS Retail. Its quite old though and I'm not sure if you should use it.

k, heres the deal. halflife is the original game. cs is a mod off that game, and when it got so popular, they decided to make some bonus $$$ on it by releasing it retail. what you have is counter-strike, not halflife at all. you dont have to worry about patches for halflife, just download patches for CS Retail. the same is true of Day of Defeat and soon Natural Selection. They both started out as hl mods, and DoD is already retail, and NS should be in the near future.
For anyone looking to really get a good deal. If youve got a faster internet connection and dont mind dling stuff. Id recommend go out and buy halflife for like $20 and you can play all sorts of mods, including cs, dod, and ns. All you gotta do is dl them. they are free.
