how do i put a pic alongside my posts?

click the Browse button in the attach file and locate the picture or any valid file with these extensions:gif,jpg,txt,zip...

Even better would be if you had some space available on the web for your images. You can link them using IMG tags. You can do this using the IMG button (right above your text window in the compose-post template), OR you can learn how to do this (and other neat vB tricks) by clicking on the "help" button next to "vB Code" (labels are listed on the left).

Do you want a picture in your actual post? or under your name?
if it's the first, they told you all about it, if you want a picture under your name like my gerbil over <--- there, it's called an avatar and you get info on it here(FAQ)

as for you just need 10 posts - go the the hello files and start saying hello. Also if you register and make yourself official, you can have an avatar before 10 posts - you just have to wait for the good ones.
And while we have this going - what if I want an avatar that is not in the list? (I know it's possible, but....)

You cannot have an avatar unless you are registered. To specify a custom avatar, you need to have 10 posts (spamming is not the way to get there).
You can upload/point to a custom avatar at the bottom of your Options page.
