Panhead, very good question! I have heard this alot, and I have fixed a few with this same problem. Now, I'm assuming that your warranty is already gone, so here is a site that might help you.

There are no pictures however, but it gives a pretty good detailed description of what you your problem is and how to fix it. So far the PS2 is the easiest to fix of the 3 consoles. But before you crack the case open (voiding the warranty) and messing with the gears just give the little optical lens a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip! That usually solves problems, but if not, refer to the guide over there at G4TechTv. Hope this resolves your problem.
