Dual Channel Question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Superfly3176

Okay I run an ABIT AN7 and I have 2 sticks of kingston same stick 512 PC3200. I was wondering if dual channel was autoenabled or if i have to do it. I didnt see anything in bios.

Dual Channel cannot be enabled or disabled as far as I know. I don't know what you are trying to ask, that's just the way DDR is.

Make sure you have the sticks in either:
DIMM1 & DIMM3
or
DIMM2 & DIMM3

Dual channel should automatically kick in

How does that work exactly?

instead of calling on one stick or ram for a whole piece of info, the cpu calls on 50% of the info from one stick, and the other 50% from the other stick of ram, thereby getting the data there quicker (2x).

but it requires that the sticks both have the same info on them, so it cuts your ram amount in half.

its kinda like RAID 1 striping for ram.

And I need to set them up precisely like Taco said for it to work?

Posted by: Ocean

yes, thats how it is enabled, youll notice you ll only have 512 of ram

Posted by: p3ngu!n

My computer registers 1.00GB of ram, and I have precisely that... what did you mean by 512?

Posted by: Ocean

do you have a dual channel mobo?

Posted by: p3ngu!n

ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe.
Yes.

Posted by: p3ngu!n

I changed them from positions to the ones you said (I think) but I have noticed no difference in speed or whatnot, and My Computer still shows 1.0GB like before. I noticed that I have DIMM_A1 DIMM_A2 and DIMM_B1 in my motherboard. I'm not exactly sure how they are set up because I can't seem to find the label anywhere. Not even in the manual. I'll look into it later but they look like this

[-----------------------]
[-----------------------]

[-----------------------]

I'm assuming the DIMM_B1 is the one that's separated. Am I correct?
They are setup like so:

[==================] DDR 512 PC3200
[-----------------------]

[==================] DDR 512 PC3200

Dual channel ram doesn't cut your amount of ram in half. When I boot up, it says that dual channel ram is enabled (abit nf7 with the ram in slot 2 and 3) and I still have the full size available.

your motherboard manual should tell you what banks are used to enable ddr and label them for you. certainly stuff online will tell you.

its the speed that changes from enable/disable, not the size.

I have almost the the exact same mobo (A7N8X Deluxe) ... you have to flash the bios to get dual channel to work on mine. It isn't available without it.

I got it work stuck it in DIMM#1 and DIMM#3 and got a message on POST screen that said dual channel enabled. Thanks guys and gals.

Another question is if I got another stick of ram not that I need it, but would Dual-channel still work or would it be void?

Posted by: taco_fox

It would work only if the amount of ram in DIMM1 and DIMM2 added up to the amount in DIMM3. Like this:

DIMM1 = 256MB
DIMM2 = 256MB
DIMM3 = 512MB

Otherwise dual channel would be disabled

so, i have 2 x 512 sticks of kingston hyper x DDR.

my mobo has 4 dimms, if my mobo is dual channel i'd get better preformance if i moved dimm 2 stck to dimm 3?

Posted by: bLaCkOuT

If you have 4 slots, chances are you don't have dual channel capabilities. However, if you check your manual it will tell you. Alternatively you can check the model number on the company's website.

Intel mobos have four slots. It doesn't matter in what slots you put the RAM, just make sure those are the ones marked for dual channel.

Ive got the Asus A7n8X-Deluxe. I just got another stick of ram yesturday, 2 kingston 512 pc3200. I have them in slots 1 and 3, I have 1gb of ram running in dual channel mode, according to the messages that appear when i boot up. When i had 1 stick it said 512mb running in single channel mode. i didnt flash the bios or anything just stuck it in.
