I have just installed an external USB IDE hard drive. I installed the driver as per the manufacturers instructions. It seems that everything went well. When I check the systems devices it is there but I don't see the drive in my computer or in the windows explorer. I tried re-installing the drivers and rebooting but i still can't see it. Is there something else i shoul be doing?
Plaese help!!
Thanks

Hello
If you are using windows xp, then you did not need to install the drivers that came with the hard disk since it has support in windows xp, but since you installed the drivers this may have prevented you from using the hard disk. i would uninstall the drivers and try to plug it in with out the drivers, then if it is windows xp it then says USB Mass Storage Device Found, then in another box it says the make of your hard disk like "MAXTOR 6GH78JK" that was an example. but in windows xp you are not recommend to install any software drivers untill you have tried it on its own first, also windows xp automatically looks for it on the cd and finds the best one that if the add hardware wizard comes up onscreen.

Hello
Windows xp finds the hardware even if the harddisk is not formatted, and you can format it in windows xp, but i would advise against doing it in windows xp, you can only format it in NTFS format, and you may not be able to read it on lets say your friends computer with windows 98, i would format it in dos using fdisk. You may need to make a dos disk with the dos drivers on it so you can access the hard disk from dos.
