Have a new computer. was working fine. Installed SystemMechanic4 and system still worked fine. About 2 weeks later - used systemmechanic to clean system, eliminate duplicate files, etc....used all of it's clean up tools. simultaneously, installed a Lexar 128 mb jumpdrive. Works fine. BUT......went to install a CD and although the CD and the DVD power up and open and close, they do not show up anywhere on the system. Was suggested I try uninstalling but there is nothing to uninstall. checked BIOS, everything is set to AUTO. tried setting to CD-ROM under 1st Slave. Got an error message. so changed it back. any help would be appreciated

boot to bios, restore defaults and reset config data. if still not detected, try to open device manager and uninstall/remove the drives there.

Not to sound like a total neophyte but the only stupid question is the one not asked so here goes. How do you reset to the default setting in BIOS (i'm at a different machine) is there a command or command keystroke to reset them?
As to the device manager. I've already been all through that and there isn't even a reference to either the CD or DVD devices anywhere in the device manager. I've tried "Add Hardware" but it doesn't detect either of them.
Thanks for everyones help.

Get in there and look around. There will be a command that says to "restore setup defaults" or something like that.

While trying to figure this out since resetting the BIOS didn't work, I opened the case to try disconnecting the drive(s), reboot, shutdown and reconnect and reboot. Remember I said I had added RAM......well, big hands here managed to nudge the ribbon cord slightly off of the motherboard. THEY WERE DISCONNECTED!!!!! OK, OK, i'm going to the corner with my dunce cap. Didn't remember the basic rule, "always check the simple stuff first". Lesson learned and thanks to all for their help. I just discovered this website and I think its great.
