I've installed and tested the last 5 versions of the catalyst drivers, and I STILL get vpu errors and hard lockups. Does anyone know of another way to fix this? I currently can't play for more than 15-20 minutes without needing a reboot.
ATI Radeon 9500 PRO
catalyst drivers 4.1
Windows XP PRO, SP1
2.4ghz P4
1GB pc2700
asus P4S8X

newest cod patch was supposed to fix this
cat 3.10 are supposed to fix this
follow the steps until it clears up:
turn off fast write
then use bilinear filtering
then turn off vpu recovery
then clock your card to normal if you overclocked.

I have similar problems with my gigacube radeon 9600 pro. The updated catalyst drivers do not work with my card. According to gigacube´s web page this was a problem with the VPU bios and supposedly could be fixed with a bios update. I downloaded the updated bios and flashed the card with all kinds of problems. It did not work. My problem is that gigacube (gecube) does not have an e-mail support address or contact telphone. My only suggestion is to check with your card manufacturer to see if they have a similar issue and hopefully they have a good bios update. I have tried almost anything to make my card compatible with the catalyst revisions with no luck. Another suggestion is to buy nvidia next time as i will (or at least only buy made by ati products).

I have the same issue. 5-15 minutes of game play and then my comp locks up. No error messages. Just a textless BSOD. I have been reading on a lot of different forums, and this seems to be a reoccuring issue. At first I thought it was just me. I've tried 6 different kinds of drivers with no luck. Turned off everything excepet the power switch on my settings. No luck. Uninstalls. Reinstalls. Nothing. I am completely open to suggestions.

Heh, the original poster has EXACTLY the same system specs that I do.
I haven't played this game yet on my system, so I can't say whether or not I've had lockups with it and the Catalyst drivers. However, based on the description of the problem so far, my first thoughts are heat and/or power issues. If the game doesn't work at all, I'd blame the drivers. However. if the problem only occurs after playing for a certain amount of time, I'd say that the stress on one's hardware is causing a problem. Have you all checked to make sure that nothing is overheating and that your power supply is feeding adequate power to all your devices under load? I know that the P4S8X comes with a program to monitor temperatures and voltages...

I have 2 different progs giving me 2 different vid temps. My ATI software is telling me that my card temps are like 66C. My Rivatuner software is telling me it's 46C. I did read that the ATI prog does tend to be about 20C's higher and is not too reliable.
But I would think that I would be ok at 46C.
Power? Another forum suggested I bump up the Vcore power. My ASUS P4C800 Deluxe has an "Auto" settings, and that's where I keep it at. I did try look to see what voltage "auto" set at and it looked like 1.6 I think. I bumped it up to 1.7, and the game still crashed on me.
Any other input with these temps and power settings?

46C is probably fine, but I wouldn't rely completely on those programs - to ensure that the card doesn't get too hot, remove the side of your case and blow cold air from a tabletop fan or something into the case to cool the card, as well as any other components that might be overheating. If the problem goes away when you do this, then you know it's a heat issue.
Don't fool with the Vcore voltage unless you know what you're doing... leave it at "auto" and reduce your FSB speed to its default value if you're overclocking.
Have you monitored your CPU/motherboard temperatures and other voltages while playing? I bet that the P4C800 came with a program for doing that like my ASUS board did...

Yeah, I have ASUS probe that monitors CPU and Mobo temps.
CPU temps idle at about 36C. During gaming they have been maxing out around 48C.
My mobo temps are pretty low, even in game play. The rarely get above 32C.

Two more things:
a. Check to make sure that your video card fan is working properly and that it's not clogged up with dirt or dust.
b. One thing to try might be reducing all of the game's video settings to their lowest values so that the demand on your video card isn't so great. If the problem doesn't occur anymore, then most likely the problem is that a greater demand on your card is causing it to overheat and/or receive insufficient power.
I still think that this is a heat and/or power issue, and hopefully you can easily rule out or confirm my theory.

I have an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 and I dont have ANY problems with Call of Duty. Nvidia all the way! I have a permanent gridge against ATI because one of their old ATI mach 64 cards fried my nice Sony Trinitron monitor, and they didnt do a damn thing about it.

The game supports both GeForce and Radeon chipsets, so either card should work fine with it. However, any card that is overheating and/or not getting enough power can cause any game to crap out.

I'll try the open case w/ fan trick, but is there any way of telling if it's a power issue?
Posted by: NegotiatorSmith
Well, first I would confirm or rule out a heat problem. If you're still having a problem when you cool the card with a fan and you're absolutely sure that the card isn't overheating, then I'd start looking at a possible power problem.
Probably the easiest way to test that theory is to simply use a different power supply in the system, preferably one that is "known good" in another system and has no problems feeding power to a card similar to the one you have when someone is playing hardware-intensive 3D games. If you don't have that option, the best way to check your voltages is with a multimeter as described on this page:
