Intermittent freeze up in XP

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello Out There,

I am having intermittent freeze up in XP Pro.
This is a new install of XP and everything seems to be working in order. No Error reports at all.
No gaming installed.
When it freezes up the only way out is to cold boot.

Should I try reinstalling to see if this take care of the problem or can someone shine some light on this ?

This is me first time here but from what I have read on this site there are some knowledgeable here.

Thank you for your concerns.

Do you have all of the windows updates and latest drivers for all of your hardware. I deficiency in any of these things can cause instability. Try updating everything before anything else.

It sounds like a power issue. Or a capacitor is going out on the mother board.

First:
Post your system specs so we know what hardware we are dealing with here.

Second:
Just a hunch but try this...(not meaning to imply that it is the motherboard):
Open the case and check all the cylinder capacitors on the motherboard and make sure none of them are bulging abnormally or busted at the top of them.

I don't think its your MOBO at all. Try and replace your memory, that should do the trick.

Hello Again and Thanks for the replys.

First Computer Bio:
. Cpu = AMD Duron 1.0 G
. Ram = (2) PC133 256 MB
. MB = Shuttle Ak12
. Display Card = ATI 128 Rage Pro 4xAGP ?
. Power Supply = 425 Watts
. NEC DVD+RW/CDRW
.CDRW 40X12X48
. Floppy 1.4

The only program installed so far ,WinDVD 2000.

Arturo , Yes I did all of the critical updates from MS.
Updated Windows Media 9.0
Updated DirectX 9.0

Demonbob , Yes I did as you requested. All capacitors
look okay. Felt each one and none of them felt hot.

psd#1 , I am running 2 PC133 256 chips and I do have a
extra one, so I guess I can which them around to see what
happens. Is there a program that I can download for testing
Ram ? If so, can you send me a link ? Thanks either way.

I know it doesn't mean anything, but my system was
running fine before with an older version of XP. I purchased a new version of Windows XP Pro, a new harddrive, a new DVD+RW, a new CDRW , and a new power suppy = 425 Watts. So everything is a new install except for the ram, display card, & cpu.

Someone told me to deactivate the screensaver to see if that had anything to do with it. I did , and it don't.

Hope this shines more light on my problem.

Well it seems that I have found my problem but I'm not sure how to fix it.
My intermittent freeze ups are being cause by :
"ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address 0x71 ." 0x71 = System CMOS, RTC.
At least this is what I found on the Miscroft site.

So it seems to me that's it a BIOS issue.
If you think of anything else, let me know.

If it can find out anymore useful information on this issue I'll update to inform those having the same problem.

Thanks for help in looking where I wouldn't have looked.
