Trying to formait hdd on an older ACER desktop(97or98)

I'm trying to format hdd on an older Acer desktop,when it gets to the point were you type A:\format c: it says bad command or file name?In fact whatever you type it says that???????????????

That means you don't have the format.com file on the boot disk. You'll have to copy that to the disk from another pc. You could also try to boot to dos from the windows installation cd, switch to the win98 dir (assuming you're going to install windows 98 to it) and run format from there.

Try FDISK...I know that format will work (or should if your path has been established)...but to either should do the job. I wish I could remember on that machine what the best option is. Window's XP makes you stupider, I think...

Acer was my first computer. It went to my mother-inlaw. After the A prompt[A:\] type in the C propmpt [C:\] and then type format C:\. If this doesn't work,go to microsoft and then microsoft help and support and enter your question. I got the answer there to your same question but I can't find it and am working with a fuzzy memory,Ha Ha!
