Acrobat Reader and Firefox won't start

First it started with Adobe Acrobat Reader. It wasn't responding, so like a typical user, I killed it and restarted it. It never came up again. That didn't bother me so much, since I never liked Acrobat Reader and I just switched to GhostScript/GhostGum.
This morning, it happened again with FireFox. The program wasn't responding well, so I closed it and tried to restart it. Windows does some work, and then appears to give up without returning an error.
Does anyone have an idea on what's going on/wrong and is there a solution to remedy this that doesn't involve reinstalling windows? Thanks.

rebooting should fix. repairing windows would probably be next on the list.

I tried rebooting, but it didn't work. I'll try again when I return home, but I don't think anything will change.
What's the best way to "repair windows"?

boot from your OS cd, there will be a repair option in there somewhere.

Rebooting didn't fix it, but I tried one more thing. First, I uninstalled Firefox.
Then I went into C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Phoenix\
and deleted everything.
Then I rebooted again and reinstalled Firefox. It worked (though I lost all my bookmarks).
I didn't bother doing that with Adobe Acrobat Reader, since I feel it's too big and bloated anyway for me to care about using it.
Thanks for the help.
