aol 9.0 AND POPUPS

A friend of mine just installed AOL 9.0 and is now being bombarded with popups. He is paying for his AOL service. What can he do to stop these annoying popups. He was using AOL 8.0 and did not have this popup problem. He received AOL 9.0 in the mail and thought he should upgrade his AOL to AOL 9.0

aol's browser has a built in popup blocker, so i am assuming he is using ie. if he doesnt want to switch to a mozilla type browser, he can download and run spybot, and install a popup blocker of his choice.
