Cable Modem Troubleshooting

Here are a few basic steps to troubleshooting your online connection using High Speed Cable modems and service providers.

Check the lights on the Cable Modem ( or CDM) typically you will see either Cable, PC, DATA, TEST, & POWER lights or SEND, RECIEVE, ONLINE, TEST, & POWER or similar. Refer to owner manual for confirmation as there are many types of CDM's if you have a Toshiba or a Motorola your fine going by the above mentioned.

A solid green cable or online light means that the CDM is talking to the server and is online.

A flashing Cable or Online indicates the modem is either looking for a signal (slow flash) or has found a signal and waiting for a responce or trying to establish the connection (fast flash).

NOTE: a fast flash is very noticable as it is like you pulse after sprinting a mile or so.

If the cable light does not come on solid green then there is either a problem with the ISP server, there happens to be a cable outage, or you are experianceing Signal issues on your line. In the case of a flashing cable light Contact your cable ISP's tech support line as you may need a service call scheduled.

The 1 st step to take when you cannot get online is to shut down the PC/MAC and pull the power from the back of the CDM. Let it stand a minimum of 10 seconds, then reconect the power to the CDM.

NOTE: Doing a "sequential boot" is recomended, this means
letting the CDM come online first.

After getting a steady cable or online light turn the PC on.

When at the desktop check for an IP address by going to:

Win 95/98/ME: Start --> Run --> type winipcfg then click
ok. Make sure the correct adapter is selected
in the drop down box on the top right. Check
see what IP you have.

Win NT/2K/XP: Start --> Run --> type CMD --> click ok
this will bring up the dos prompt.
At the prompt type in IPCONFIG , check to
see what you IP is.

MAC OS 9 : Click on the apple at the top left goto control
pannle and then to TCP/IP. Youll find the IP
in here.

MAC OS X : Click on the apple at the top left and open
system preferences. Open the network icon.
Youll'll find IP under the TCP/IP tab.

What to look for in the IP:

If you're IP address shows as 169 this is a default auto IP when the system can't obtain an IP Address.

A 192 is a router IP that indicates you are on a router.

A typical Dynamic IP will be 208.xxx.xxx.xxx or some other number at the start that is not 192 or 169


If you show your static IP that you have from your ISP or a typical Dynamic you are connected to the internet, or atleast you computer should be.
