Planet of the Apes

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Gerbilo

Ok guys and gals, I went to see Planet of the Apes tonite, sheesh, it was packed.

I'm not gonna spoil it or anything. It was pretty good, not great, but good. The special effects(if you want to call it that) were pretty good, from what i saw, the news/critics are right, facial expressions are pretty good.

There were lots of crazy story twists or surprises, whatever they are. These made the movie pretty damn cool compared to what it could have been without them. The only problem with it was much was predictable. The main plot surprise i predicted pretty early in the movie, but I think you are supposed todo that in this movie. And the final ending surprise(not the same as the original, they did a nice job trying to fill its shoes with it though) I figured out pretty early in the final scene.

I dunno, I liked it, thought it was worth the money. Good movie if you like to figure things out but don't like to try too hard. Go see it, playing in theaters now.

And the rating it gets from me is 3 paws up(out of 4)

i wouldn't go by that if i were you though

Have fun at the movies people! (just be smart and don't chug your cola, because of when I was at Final Fantasy and had to make a urinal run, I decided I wasn't gonna drink a lot before this movie lol

i went to go see it tonight and i thought it was really good. the ending was cool to . i think i'll go see it again. i liked the main villian in the movie to, he seemed really screwed up for a "ape", and thats a cool thing. the movie was worth $8. did it live up to the hype? yes and no. it could have been a little longer and more deep than it was. i knew it was going to be an action flick going in but i wanted it to trancend that mold and be a action movie that makes people think, kinda like the original. i need to go back and watch the first one again because it has been forever since i've seen it. out of all the movies that came out this summer this was my favorite. now i have to wait for silent bob and jay strike back

Just got back from watching POA ... effects and makeup are truly great, and the story is unique...

<somewhat spoiler>

What I didn't like about it was the ending ... it SUCKED. It's grim, it's not uplifting, and it just has too many holes... Its ending reminded me of the old ending for Army of Darkness ... it just plain sucked... I almost groaned at the end of the movie...

</somewhat spoiler>

Of course, it's still worth watching just for the 90% of the film that's really good ... but those who are suckers for happy endings should steer clear...

Posted by: AK47

great... now the movie is somewhat spoiled for me

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Hehehe AK...

Oh and another thing that was bothering me was where the horses came from...

Posted by: Gerbilo

yeah, after thinking about the movie i had many questions lol...

They needed to make the time more defined, i wasn't sure around what year these things take place,

also, yeah the ending was fubar heheh.... i mean, how the hell did that happen?! heh

Posted by: mike

maby there will be a second one and they will tell us about the horses, i'm shure it would be a good story. . that one girl in the movie was a dolt, she was usless to the movie in my opinion. well not completly usless , if you smell what i'm cooking.

Posted by: Charon the Hand

Yah, agreed that it's good but not great. But having said that, I was pretty impressed with how the apes retained a lot of ape-like social mannerisms, e.g. sniffing, growling, hooting. That did a good job of giving the feeling that these were not just guys in ape suits, these were members of a somewhat alien culture, notwithstanding their use of American Standard English. Good music too, nice mood setter.

I will see the movie when it comes out on video in a year or so. However, I found this version that you might want to see. It is called "This Modern World~Planet of the Dubyas". A nice interesting flash movie. It is the second film from the top.

You can find it here. There are other various flash vidoes to watch on that site.

Awe man! I'm sorry guys, I just came back from the theatres and... Crap, what load of.... (Damn my limited vocabulary) Crap.

I'll have to admit, Tim Burtin did a great job on the costumes. But plot wise, it totally sucked IMO. All they did was sit by a campfire. No character development or anything. Like Mike said, that chick was completely useless. And that kid at the end, wanting to prove himself... grrr, should've got run over by the monkeys!

Bah, sorry about the ranting, but I was really dissapointed.

[spoiler alert - admin]

The ending didn't make a whole lot of sense either... Cause he was going back to the present time. But in present time, Thade was already ancient, but Thade didn't exist until the future, what's up with that?!

IMO i would wait for this movie to come out on video, and then let your friend rent it (And you getta freebie ;p) j/k.

Homer.

Admin's Note: Hehe Homer, next time don't forget to say "spoiler" before you give out the ending - there are still some people who haven't seen it yet, so don't spoil it for them

I thought the movie was gonna be dumb, but I was talking to a frined last night and she wanted to see it, so finally I agreed and we went out to the theater...Then right from the beggining...when they were still showing the director credits etc, I realized, oh boy this is gonna be a good one" And sure enough it was. I just had to complain about how the dude was always flirtin w/ the dumb ape lady, when that one chick was always sittin in the corner waitin for him...wtf...

[semi/notatall/justsoidontgetyelledat spoiler alert]

That ending kicks ass. Its not the happy ending, its just...so unanswered, it leaves everyone hanging...I love it! I hope there is a sequal that resolves it, and then leaves us hanging again...

[endwhateverthatis]

thats my 2 cents

I finally went to see it thursday night, ended up being a great movie, laughed at the heston cameo, "those damned dirty humans!" hahaha!!! Anyway, yeah the movie rocked, the ending sucked, confused the hell out of me, heh, I didn't get how he could go back to the past from the future and have the adversary from the future be ancient in the past...nevermind, getting confused again, going to go cleanse my mind with much needed sleep

Posted by: Gerbilo

hehe, spider, i was wondering how many people would know it was him hehe

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Hehehe, what was hilarious was seeing Charlton Heston actually say "guns are baaaad..."

Posted by: Spider

LOL Laggy!! I hadn't thought of it that way hahhaa!

Posted by: Hackenslacker

bastard spider, give a warning before giving a spoiler.

:P

I was already to like POA but once you get past the great looks and find there is absolutely no story and the action is mostly pointless it's hard to say anything else good about it.
And the ending was pretty poor...(I was ready to be surprised). If I had done the writing this would of been the surprise ending I could of come up with after 2 or 3 minutes thought (and I am a lousy writer). The highlite of the movie was the hero's kiss with the monkey.

10 minutes of fun...

As for JP3. It was surprisingly good(after JP2 I was ready to hate this). POA should of taken it's path ...Lots of well done action and some story behind it. 80 minutes fun and 10 minutes of story.

Posted by: Bishop

From the previews (and reading both books) it looked like JP3 took the parts of the first and second book that didn't make it into the movies and filmed them.

I haven't seen it yet and probally won't until it's out on DVD, but can anyone clarify on this?

and wtf is with all the islands? does the old bastard (who suposedly died at the end of the first book) have them all over?

Posted by: Canis Lupus

There were only two islands - Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna ... Isla Nublar was supposed to be the main island for the park to open, while Isla Sorna was "Site B" where all the dinosaurs are supposedly being raised before they are shipped to Isla Nublar...

At the end of the first book, the Costa Rican government bombed Isla Nublar and Grant and Co. were held for debriefing at the Costa Rican headquarters. That was where it ended.

In the second book, Michael Crichton made it appear that Malcolm was only "technically" dead (he died in the first book) and therefore had him lead the adventures on Site B, Isla Sorna.

Spielberg, in the tradition of most Hollywood directors, changed the endings for both the adaptations to make them look more cinematic, with the T-Rex being the main star in both.

Actually, he used material from the first book into The Lost World (the Compys, the juvenile T-Rex, etc.), as well as the third movie (the Pteranodon aviary, mostly)... it was all a mishmash of derived plots. The first movie was, of course, the most faithful because almost the entire plot remained true, except for Malcolm's and Hammond's deaths. The end of the the first book also had the raptors lined up at the beach wanting to migrate, and the Costa Rican airforce has begun bombing afterwards...

Thanks to Crichton's sudden decision to "revive" Malcolm in the second book, Spielberg can continue his directorial decision to have Malcolm (Goldblum) survive the first movie, and since he was a "memorable" character, he is the main character in the second movie.

Another notable change from the book to the movie in the first one was the gender of the children involved in the adventure. In the first book, the boy was older than the girl, as well as the one who knew a lot about computers. In the movie, we know of course that the girl was the elder nerd - or hacker, as she likes to call herself.

In the second book, there were TWO children who hitched a ride to Isla Sorna, while in the movie there was only one, and a black girl at that.

One big reason that JP1 was very faithful to the book was Spielberg was already making some storyboards even before Crichton finished his book. He just decided to change the ending coz he was so in love with his T-Rex, hehehe...

The third movie was just a hype-vehicle in an attempt to cash in on the Jurassic Park franchise. Also situated on Isla Sorna, the reason why there is no plot is because there is no good story to base it on - Crichton wisely stopped writing any more sequels to his dinosaur books because he understood that it was time to stop. But not Spielberg.

I love all three movies coz of the special effects and the dinosaurs. But the only one I really liked in terms of story was the first one, because it was almost faithful to the book.

Those who haven't read the two books should consider reading them. They provide a richer story, and they tell you some VERY interesting details that could not be translated into film.

(I love how the first book separated each Act with an iteration from Ian Malcolm's Chaos Theory...)

Posted by: Bishop

yeah that was pretty cool.

It's been a LONG time since I read the second book, and I only read it once. I read the first one even longer ago, but I read it two or three times so I remember more.

the idiocy with the kids was noticed in both movies, as well as malcom supposedly dying.

The thing that annoyed me most about the first movie was that gennaro is some wimp in the movie and not in the book and that muldoon got wasted in the most idiotic of ways.

have to love his multiple loading-spring-click rifle scene though.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Hehehe, that was what really surprised me in Jurassic Park 1 and the first book - it's as if Spielberg was playing a sick joke on Crichton's script by killing those that lived and letting those that died in the book survive.

Hammond = dead (book), alive (movie)
Malcolm = dead (book), alive (movie)
Muldoon = alive (book), dead (movie)

I can't remember if Gennaro actually died in the book though...

Posted by: Bishop

I seem to remember him getting trapped somewhere, perhaps around the time they raided the raptor nest.

I know if he does die, it's near the end, but the only part he's a fruit in is the part where he runs away from the cars with the t-rex, but if you think about it, if you see a t-rex coming up at you, are you going to STAND there or try and hide if you have a good chance of making it away?

Posted by: Gerbilo

I read the first book and watched the first and second movies, from what i can tell, laggy knows his stuff

Posted by: Hackenslacker

I saw Planet of the Apes today.
that ending... sucks big toenails.
the constumes were good though.
but that ending....
<spoiler removed> Ah, sorry. Thx Gerb

oh, and that one kid, the pre-teen boy. He had all of 39 words; I counted (might have missed some lines though).

"Get your hands off me, you damn dirty human."

Posted by: Gerbilo

hackenslack... spoiler in your words

Posted by: AK47

Posted by: Spider

Yeah, the black pre-teen genius was named Arby.

Posted by: Hackenslacker

Posted by: Spider
