Image slices vs. image mapping

Which would have a wider compatibility range: a nav bar which used separate images as links or a nav bar of one image with an image map??

In my opinion I would recommend Image slices, as you can edit each slice individually, and have more range. But as far as compatability goes, an image map would probably be more compatable. By what would you be seeing how compatable it is? IE 6.0 and Netscape or something?

IMHO, I'd go for image slices instead of an image map ... even though the total file size of the image slices put together would be a little bigger than if it were combined into one single image map, the illusion of speed comes through with image slices (each slice showing up "faster" than waiting for the whole image map to load). this is especially useful when presenting the nav bar to dial-up users... With broadband users, it won't make much difference...
In terms of compatibility, image slices can be pretty dicey if you design the page either through the W3C standards or through IE's own version of standards, especially with CSS. Image maps probably wouldn't havwe this problem, as they are just one image using math to calculate coordinates - but don't take my word for it, since the last time I used image maps was in 1998...
This, of course, also depends on the type of nav bar used. If the nav bar is something unorthodox (menu items located in areas that cannot be sliced in the standard X/Y coordinates, i.e. diagonal slices which is not efficient when piecing images together), then image maps would be better ... nowadays, however, most designers use java applets or flash to accomplish what image maps did before...
