Consoles are so flimsy nowadays!

I remember the good ol' days of consoles which could take a nuclear blast and still survive. But now, knock it off a shelf a foot and a half of the ground and BAM! Stupid thing is dead.
Well, that sucks.

lol nova, read what i replied in the other topic, not realizing this was here heh
my SNES fell off a 3 foot shelf, didn't even turn off or anything heh, kept on working as if nothign happened

Yes, the fragility quotient does rise as soon as you have moving parts….Kind of hard to hurt a cartridge based system.
Posted by: Gerbilo
yeah!!
same with N64 controllers, those take a beating. Mine and AK's friends beat the shit outta my n64 controllers...
But if they try it with my DC controllers i'll beat them!! heh

hah! damn right! N64 controllers are near unbreakable, every time I die or whatnot on zelda or re2 or whatever, I whip my controller across the room into a wall or whatever is convenient, heh.

Yeah, mine get thrown at the ground, back at the system and stomped on, hehe.

Oh, now I'm gone.
Just about any cartridge game I've played to completion has taken an "express" trip to the wall, and several of them have lose bits of plastic and screws floating around inside of them, ALL are fully functional.
My controllers. You name a food, they've had it spilled on them. Always open them and clean them, they work fine after the smell is gone.
Systems. My NES has been through everything. I've thrown it, I've stomped it, I've kicked it, I've even bashed it with nunchucks while playing TMNT. It always works. One time my brother got pissed playing mega man 1, and he hit the system. It warped him to the final level with max power ups, and let him play the game to the end, something he'd never done before. My atario has anything done to it that my NES has. It still worked up until my dad threw it out without telling us. He though it was broken because we played it on a B&W TV. I cried that day.
My SNES has been fairly abused, the only thing to stop it from running is when I ripped the cartridge out while it was on. But simply putting it back in and pushing power fixed it.
N64 hasn't taken much abuse since I'm older now, but it's been dropped and kicked before.
My coleco is the only one I ever fully broke. I was playing Smurfs, and here's where I'm confused. My brother says I got pissed because I couldn't beat it and jumped on the system, I say I was so happy to be playing that I cartwheeled in the living room and landed on it. Either way, I wound up on top of it, and it crunched.
Cartridge systems used to be made for abuse. Disc based systems won't even let me sneeze on them. ):

at the risk of sounding like the Sega fanboy that I am, I gotta say that Sega does build some strong systems.
saturn- damn this was a sturdy box. While the Playstation would have problems with overheating and the lens track wearing out, Saturns would just never die. They weighed a ton, but they could survive alot, especially just regular gaming.
Dreamcast- so far, so good. Havent heard any complaints about this one. The system is small and quite heavy. Never overheats, nothing wears out- solid overall. One thing that is questionable is the controller. Besides its horrible design, they arent too sturdy. VMUs fly out at impact and various plastic parts either break off or snap inside causing annoying rattles. You just gotta be chill with them. Have a N64 controller around for relieving stress. My favorite is to ring those damn things out like towels. Still havent broken one..
as for PS2, the thing I dont like is that tray for the disc...bad idea. Yeah, it looks killer, but it is quite flimsy. I know a guy who's kid snapped the tray off by dropping the system. Yeah, obviously your kid shouldnt be dropping the system, but the damn tray is a bad idea.

My C-64 still works..hehe
Too bad it's too old to play anything worthwhile.
Posted by: Chako
Ion...they do make excellent door stops though...I know...I used mine to prop a door for about half a year.

My friends have told me horror stories about their Sega master systems, genesises (is that how to pluralize it?), 32Xs, disc drives all living through torture. Being dropped, kicked, drop kicked, slammed with the controller, falling out a 3rd story window. They all worked fine after a little cleaning.
My C64 monitor is currently in use on my console games, NES, SNES, N64, PSX, works like a dream after at least 15 years, probably more. The only part of the C64 that stops me from using it to play extremely old games is the disk drive, it just burned out after my dad used it for so long. I'd gladly take that "door stop" off your hands. ^_^

knock over a PS2 when it's in the upright position and you can say bye bye to it. My younger cousin knocked over my older cousin's PS2 and he now pays about $20 a month to compensate
Posted by: Null Actor
Yeah. That's basically what happened to mine. I'm gonna try and get a replacement dvdrom for the thing (since I'm pretty sure the only problem is that the lens is scuffed up).
Hopefully I can fix it.

As I read the majority of this thread, I saw that people threw systems? What the hell is wrong with you that you throw systems. Shit, throwing a controller is fine (its right in your hands), but a system? jeez, that aint right.
Posted by: Swilo
Last time I threw a system was my SNES, like 9-10 years ago, cause when I picked it up there was a nice whole in the wall and the paint scraped off onto the system(Go lead-based paint!), so I never did that again, but it makes you feel so much better than just the controller or a nearby object(including friends and family, don't ask).

Never, ever, EVER drop a large television onto your PS2! The wimpy little PS2 breaks into little bits. It's ridiculous how little these game systems can stand up to nowadays.

This happened to us a week after we got our PS2 last year. My roommate was drinking heavily and decided he needed to rearrange the wires behind the entertainment system. He ended up knocking the TV off onto his PS2, shattering the glass of the entertainment system door, and swearing at himself for a week.

Eerrr... that sucks.
Bet sony won't fix THAT for 140$

swilo, was SNES out 10 years ago?
Posted by: Null Actor
Longer than 10 years ago bud... at least 13
Posted by: Bishop
nes was out earlier than 87 I believe.
my nes box says 87, but I may have had a late copy, could have sworn I had a nes game that had a date of 84.
snes came out in 91 I think, maybe 90.
10, 11 years.

Never question my authority on all things nintendo.
Foolish rodent!

9 h 3 3 2
Posted by: Gerbilo
I dunno, i just know i had a SNES a few weeks after it came out heheh
Posted by: AK47
SNES came out at least 13 years ago? Not in the states. I recon Bishop has it right 90 or 91...89 at the very earliest, but that aint right.
Posted by: Chako
Ok this settles it...take a look at this little history of Nintendo.
History of Nintendo
The NES came out in 83, 84 in North America.
The SNES came out in 91.
Posted by: Null Actor
Snes came out in 91 in the states sure, but I'm pretty sure the super famicom was a few years earlier.
Posted by: Null Actor
1990 for the superfamicom I guess.
Funny thing though... I can't believe the gameboy came out before the super nintendo. Crazy.
Posted by: Bishop
I figured it was 83 or so for the nes, cause I have a few carts that came out in 84.
my box says 87 since it was a little hard for an infant to buy a nes in 84, a 3 year old however had a lot less trouble.

lol.

OK, don't say PSX is flimsy, i saw quite a display tonite at AK's work
He was playing THPS2 and he threw the controller, pulling the system off a TV, the system had to have been 5 feet off the ground. The system bounced, the CD flew out and landed a few feet away. AK, knowing his high score could be lost, quickly replaced the system and the disc, Did the memory card come out too? anyway, the game saved and ran as if nothing happened. Lol, that was great heh. You did break 600,000 in THPS2 like you wanted to though
Posted by: Null Actor
Yeah, the PSX's are tough bastards.
The problem with the PS2 is the tray. Consoles shouldn't have trays... they just BEG for being broken.
Posted by: Bishop
a Test of the PSX's toughness without actually taking a sledge to it....
me and a friend were playing soul reaver at his house, on that water level.
Both up really late, falling asleep fast, starting to lose touch with the game.
So after about 2 hours jumping crawling and flying to the boss, my friend gets knocked off the platform and into the water.
he does a little front flip sort of twisting thing over the coffee table after hurling the PSX controller at the wall (put a rather good sized hole actually) and took the PSX, ripped it off the table, made a clean seperation with the A/V cords while the power cable came clean out of the wall, took two steps to the window and hurled it into his yard, from the third floor (well, attic of the second floor actually, but it ammounts to the same thing).
Hit the grass, he went downstairs, picked it up, brought it back in, we plugged it in and it worked perfect, excepting the memory card which must have been damaged when the psx impacted controller-slots first, and the door to the psx popped open and wouldn't close intitially, but after a while it worked.
Posted by: AK47
Damn, and I thought I did some damage. Hell, Mine fell about 5 maybe 5 and a half feet, landed right on the side, and the disc popped right out. I quickly put the system upright again and put the disc in. The system didnt have to load up again or nothin! I was quite shocked.
Ive never thrown a system out a window though
