If I'm downloading can I open another explorer window and surf sites without corrupting my download? I got a dial up connection, and an external 56k modem. I'm connected slow because of my location (I think, I've been trying to speed it up forever.) I've tried new drivers, new flash, initialization strings everything. The dang thing won't speed up. Not even at night, I said, I said, the dead of night there son.

its no different than surfing 2 sites at once. your comp doesnt know one download from another. but its going to take much longer to download.

You cant speed up downloading on 56k. You can speed up webpage loading, but only by caching. And if things change on that page, they will need to be redownloaded into the cache. Earthlink, Netzero and Aol are running those rediculous commercials of the high speed dial-up, theres no such thing.
Broadband is becoming more and more available in the U.S. now, you should check weekly on if its available in your area. A good place to do that is http://www.broadbandreports.com

The "high speed" does work. Only to a point. If you read the "small print", you'll find out that it will not speed up downloading of files.
It's based on technology old as modems itself. Simple compression. The service provider, whom is connected by broadband, simply compresses the pictures and images before sending, and your "software" uncompresses it before showing. This speeds up loading of "some" pages. The fact that they say up to 5x, is possible if a page is based soley on images. In all reality, compression has been around a long time, starting with hardware compression on external modems.
So basically they are charging you for a service that's been around almost as long as dialup, with a few "additions", the same price as some broadband varieties.
As downloading and surfing won't hurt, I'm on 28.8k dialup and I do it. Things are put into super slow motion, not like we aren't already. But it makes you feel like you're before the dark ages.
Don't feel bad, I know how it is. Try the url SKYHN recommended. If you can get broadband and use the internet alot, it's definetly worth it.
