Nonresponsive programs on SBC DSL

For the past few months my DSL had been working perfectly, but fairly recently things have gotten bad. I don't really know what happened but lately I've been getting a lot of Nonresponsive programs while surfing the web. Most of the time it happens when I try to open a link on one website to another, other times it just happens when I open a site period. Also, this irratation happened at the exact same time that I've been getting an excessive amount of pop-ups on the Internet Explorer program. I think the two must be related, but I don't know how.
It seemed to have started when a new search bar from "whenyousearch" appeared at the bottom of my desktop. No idea how it got there. I erased it, but things have just gotten worse with the pop ups and non-responsive programs. I've got Norton 04 for the pop ups, but it doesn't work at all. In fact, all my Norton firewall does for me is keep my SBC DSL from connecting!
Help me if you can.
Thanks!

Download and run Adaware. You might have some spyware/adware thats blocking sites or causing other things.

Make sure you update the reference file after installing and before you scan.

I've got adaware, which has always worked for me in the past, but this new problem is different Adaware has no effect on it. Whatever is happening to my system can't be solved by it. I'm getting popups from IE, which I don't really use as I have Yahoo SBC DSL, but they come up anyway. And the really frustrating part is that I can no longer click on a link with out getting a nonresponsive program that shuts down my browser. I've done a little bit of trouble shooting, but I'm at a loss to explain why this is happening to me.

theres a reason adaware and spybot are different. they do catch different things.
i dont know what browser youre using, but try firefox and see if its reasonably functional.
clear all your cookies and your cache. run windows update. then UPDATE and run both adaware and spybot. then hit the following online scans:
www.trendmicro.com
www.trojanscan.com
make sure you dont go anywhere else. you might want to clear your home page in case youre getting stuff there. lock your hosts file and disable 3rd party cookies. if you use a moz based browser, disable popups. if youre running xp, disable the messenger service, and other unneeded services.
if your computer is still doing the macarena at that point, give a last shot with hijackthis. its quite a bit more cumbersome than spybot or adaware, but it should find any odd registry entries.
things get ugly after that.......
