A coupleof days ago, all of a sudden I started getting this Windows Installer pop-up window every time I start the computer. Nothing seems to be affected - all my applications are working fine, but it is still quite upsetting.
What happens is:
1) i get the pop-up window saying "Windows Installer preparing to install"
2) "Wait while Windows configures Windows Office Pro with front Page"
3) "The feature is on a network resource that is not available" - here I get some odd path which is definitely not on my computer
4) it is telling me to go "to folder containing the Install package PROPLUS.MSI"
5) and finally when i click cancel since I do not seem to have that file on my computer - "Error 1706. Setup cannot find requested files. Check connection to network or CD-ROM drive". The connection is absolutely fine.
I tried to install Installer 2.0 or 1.2 from Windows website. in both cases I get a window saying "Wrong OS". Then I tried going into Word's help and do "Detect and Repair" - tells me everything is just fine, Installer installs alright, but the problem still persists nevertheless.....
Like I said it started happening only a couple of days ago without me altering anything. Any suggestions?

This happens because of the following reason;
When you install a program on your computer, for instance microsoft office, it comes (often) as an MSI or Microsoft Installer file. There are two ways of installing them; installing them wholely or "publishing" them whereby only the basics are installed, and the rest is installed as you need it which is what has happened here.
Basically Windows is trying to install the other bits of Microsoft Office that you need, and needs the file proplus.msi to do it.
You should replace the path to proplus.msi in the dialog box which is "odd" and "definitely not on my computer" with where the file actually is (probably best bet is your original office CD).
It ISN'T a problem with Windows Installer :-)

Run a registry cleaner, scan disk and defrag the hard driver.
You must have tryed to install 'something' for that to happend?
What ever you installed last (few days ago) remove it via my computer/control panel/add and remove programs
