Standard resolution

What is a good resolution to develop websites in?? I rock my display at 1024 x 768 most of the time but not everyone has that option. I'm thinking that for site design purposes I should consider a lower resolution to reduce visitors having to side-scroll to view all the content. But, I'm looking at this site in 800 x 600 and I notice that the content spills a little so. . .any advice??

I'd say the standard would be 800x600. If you shrink your browser to about that size, most websites render just right at that size.

yep, 800 by 600 is still used by many home users simply because its the resolution their pc's get shipped with already set up!

You could use jscript to check users resolutions and direct them to the version of the site designed for their resolution if you are feeling patient, otherwise to make a site look good in all resolutions you will need to design your graphics look good with or without gaps in your 1005 width tables...

I agree everything I develop, I do it around 800X600 this is what most computer users use.

it's also helpful to put the whole site in a 800px wide table so things don't get squished & distorted on 640x480 displays. people with 640x480 will always have a horizontal scrollbar, but it serves 'em right!
