I have lag problems when i shouldn't be

When I am playing counterstrike my ping goes all the way up to 1200 and never goes down. We just got directway sattelite and got rid of our old 56k connection so this shouldnt be happening. we have Microsoft windows xp with a 64 mb geforce MX graphics card.

Satellite internet connections have extremely high ping times and high rates of packet loss. There's absolutely nothing you can do about it.
