Preserve spacing, but!

I'm making a little Amazon review type thing with PHP and I wanted to preserve spacing so that the text and their indents stayed, so I added <pre> to the formatting but found that this happened (plus it's an ugly monotype font)

So how do these forums / anything keep line breaks, etc?
