Xp Pro Vpn Setup Help

I need help creating a VPN. The purpose will primarily be so that a friend of mine and I can play game locally (LAN) without having to pack up our systems and haul it down to the others house (he's right up the strett).
We have have highspeed 1.5 / 768 Internet conenctions through speakeasy. We are also both running windows XP. We have tried using the windows vpn thing and we can get connected at pretty good speeds but when we pull up the lan lobby in say... C&C generals we can not see each other.
He (My friend) is going through a router. I am plugged directly into my modem.
Ok heres what we figured out. As soon as he opened port 1723 on his router our connects to each other were faster and we were able to play games. The only catch is that
1.) When either of us connect to each other we loose outside internet... and can only access each other's resources (file shares)
2.) I can not view his resources if I connect to him.. but have no problem accessing his shares if he connects to me.
Any suggestions?
