I've had to reinstall windoze XP something like 3 times in the last 2 months from a clean hard drive. Here's what I've done:
1. I hooked up the hard drive to another computer I have here at home and reformatted it as NTFS.
2. reinstalled the hard drive into the original computer
3. went online and downloaded the WINDOWS XP BOOT DISKS from microsoft. Now beware: there's the XP boot disks and the XP service pack1 disks. I've found that although I was pretty sure I had an sp1 version of XP only the clean XP boot disks worked for me.
4. made the series of floppy disks (6 I believe) on another computer.
4.5 note: the way this works is it's a file you download and then run. It prompts you to put in a blank floppy disk and it records the info to the floppies one by one. I have actually done this with one disk, just copying one disk full of info onto it and then popping it into the formatted computer, then swapping it back to the original computer to write disk #2's info onto it, etc.
5. booted the formatted computer with the XP floppy disks one by one. Make sure to use ALL OF THEM!!
6. inserted the windows XP cd.
7. spend 10 hours reinstalling all my software.....
I hope this helps

Tried all of this before and still could not get the thing to boot in to XP setup! That is why we used partion magic with no luck.

the hard drive has nothing to do with the problem. the problem is that you are not booting from the cd for whatever reason.
make sure that booting from cd drive is enabled in the bios, and disable boot from hard drive. SAVE these settings. if it wont boot to the cd then, you have a bigger issue than a hard drive.
