Sendmail for Windows?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi there, I'm running Apache 2 on my WinXP machine to create a "localhost" so I can test my Perl CGI scripts. I've run into the problem that Windows does not have the Sendmail command like Unix. I was wondering if anyone knew of a Sendmail for Windows that was free (ie. not a demo or shareware). I'm trying to stay away from the Net::SMTP alternative as it all sounds terribly confusing to me and I also suspect that the site I will be eventually uploading to is Unix based, and so I feel the scripts will eventually be using the Sendmail command and just want a way to run it in windows for testing purposes (and so I don't have to change the code after testing). Can anyone help?

Well, I think you'll find it a lot easyier to duel boot with linux then finding a free send mail program for linux. I just did a major serch for you on the usual dev boards I visit for php and perl. And that usally the preofessional opinion. I did find one suggestion that a college made one as a project, but yet in my main internet serches I could not find a download, or a artile on it dating later then aug. 2002.

My opinion would be to wither duel boot with linux or find an old P1 box with a 3 gig hd and install linux on it to test all your scripts. Being as most of the software i've looked for in the past to do sendmail when I first started learning php, have been either shareware or, non-free.

Denpeding on how big your HD is in you computer duel booting with linux would be the best solution. Which is what I did.

Hope some of this infomation helps in someway.

I'm willing to try Linux if all else fails, but what Distribution should I get? I went to linux.org and was confronted with about a million options.
If I get it, it'll be going onto an old P1 which I hope to set up as a server...any suggestions? I'd like somthing fairly stable.

Redhat 9 from http://www.redhat.com is pretty stable version, and good for running local severs - Personal experaince, very good

Mandrake 9.2 http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3 , stable aimed at normal users and not techedout geeks. - Personal experaince, very good

Debian 3.0r2. - http://www.debian.org/, never used it, but her some pretty good review from it.

FreeBSD 5.2.1 - www.freebsd.org/ never used it, last I heard it was ok.

Linux - www.linux.org - Again never used it, just heard about it.

I recommecd RedHat or Mandrake.

I ghosted over to the redhat site, it says $179?? I thought all Linux distributions were free? I'm just a poor run of the mill guy, what can I get for free?

I just read a post saying that redhat was being discontinued in favour of fedora? Any insights there?

Forgive me, I'm brand new at Linux and know very very little about it.

Hmmm, been a while since i've been thier.

Go with mandrake, it seems like the fedora prject which is meant to replace redhat 9 is stll in dev stage. And with what it looks like thier discontinueing of redhat 9 support, mandrake would be your best option. Soory for the mis infromation above. I have not visited nor have I downloaded an update to redhat in a while.

Ok, last post for today (fingers crossed)
There are 4 iso's available for mandrake
3 cd's
and a MandrakeMove-i586.iso
Do I need this last iso? What is it?

Posted by: compukeith

mandrake move is a "live" distrobution. This means that it'll boot directly off the cd so you can test it before installing. You can make sure that it's going to recognize all your devices.

ok, so I broke my promise, another post

Can I burn an ISO to a CD-RW or does it have to be a regular CD-R

Posted by: slugo3

CD-RW is fine as long as the cd drive your booting from isnt really old and if you haven’t downloaded the iso's yet then let me recommend your best linux option Slackware the 1 iso install cd will install sendmail and it will be running out of the box (apache too) as long as your dns and mx record is setup right. if all your doing is testing locally it will work no problem.
