can't open boot partition to check for signature

I cannot boot Win2K pro - get message Can't open Boot partion to check for signature. I have zeroed the drive and done a clean install - but after copying 2K files system reboots and I still get Can't open boot partion. I have used Travelstar utilities to check drive and re-zero drive. System is Dell L 400 laptop.

Any ideas on what is going on here?

Thanks for the help.

Try running the diagnostics on the disk - make sure there isn't any corruption on it.

I did run the diagnostics - both from the repair console and from a utility for this drive supplied by Hitachi - in both cases the drive tested OK.

did you repartition the drive as well, or just wipe it and install?

I have zeroed, deleted all partitions and performed a fresh install - several times!

well, if it was a desktop, id suggest slapping another drive in there and see if you get the same error. on a laptop, best i can suggest that you can do at home is to go into the bios and make sure its set for booting from the hard drive first. other than that, i think youll have to take it into a service center.
