does anyone on this site have info on certifications and programming languages im just starting school for programming and i jsut finished my A+ certification and was wondering what certifications to persue next i was thinking cisco and mcse and network/security+ is this too many certs, and i wont have time to possibly pursue all of these areas or is more areas of knowledge better also can you tell me if i should take classes or just get the books and learn it on my own. next question what operating systems should i master i am allready very skilled in XP but thats probably not much of an accomplishment to some of the techs on this site anyway also what programming lanuages should i concentrate on. i have procured books on Perl,SQl,Xml,Cobal,VisualBasic,Java, and C++ what ones are the most vaulable to learn please list anything important to learn and any websites where uptodate tutorials can be found that pertain to security, lanuages, and other important Pc Knowhow thanks alot pip

Aight,

Lets get started,

First, thier are not many certifications for programming languages, and even though thier not really highly reconized. The best "cert" for porgramming is degree backing it. Take this from someone who knows.

I'd go for your CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate), and MCSE. And possibly go for some of M$'s higher exam's. The CCNA class is a good one, i've taken it and am certified in it.

For what languges you should start learning. I myself personaly started with C++, and i'd recommed trying to learn that first, be most newer programming/scripting languages are based on similar logic.

Books: I get this question alot, and for beginners i recommend the "dummy" books. No, i'm not kidding you. C++ for dummies is a very good beginner resource. Also might want to look into some of the major dev forums out here. http://www.gametutorials.com/ has alot of good begginner tutorials posted. Over 75 megs of them infact. And a good thing is that the autors know how to explain most of it in lemans trems.

Touching on the subject of certifications again. It depends on what field you plan on going in. A+ and Net+ are always good ones to start out with. It depends on where you wanna go after that. CCNA (And all other cisco certs). Are really aimed at people going towords the networking field. As a fellow programmer. I'd suggest going for the MCSE next. And stay away from the CCNA unless you plan on going into networks. It will save you money and headaches of studing for a while till you get a job. After you get a good job in the field you want, then you can always take the CCNA courses. Most school will ofer them at night, I know the ones down here do.

Also if you going to be learning SQL which you probaly will, being as programming course usally touch database programming here and thier. I recomment installing MySQL on your home computer and IIS to get use to it. PHP is also free and a very good language to learn it is almost identical as far as structore goes.

hope some of this information helps,,,,

Well that really depends who you get as an instructor. Our let us play tricks on the other groups, like screwing up settings, adding 50 my computer icons to the computer, dumping temp files on the desktop. The give each group a time limit to get thier computer running then wireing up 4 routers, 2 switchs with 5 pcs where the pcs have thier own virtual lan.

Needless to say our group kicked ass. 3 People configured 5 pcs, 4 routers, and 5 pcs, to see each other on the network, and fixed all the dumb stuff the other groups did too our pc's in under 20 mins.

Hehe it took the other 2 groups of 5 people each 45-60 mins a peice on thier try...

Our group also had out of class crams, stay up all night get alot of beer and pizza, everyone bring all thier computers....which was like 3 a peice, and network the shit out of them till we could do the shit in our sleep. Also had a VPN going between us at one time. And Terminal servers. Hehe 500 gigs of warez and music traded between us lol.
