i was wondering what i should do about my dvd rom and my keyboard im having problems with. recently my dvd rom drive has been acting funny and my cordless keyboard has been doing this thing when i boot the computer the first time i touch the keypad it wont register the first keystrike. my dvd rom drive will not show up or register in the control panel like its not even there. this has been causing me to nolonger be able to write form cd to cd and somtimes my computer will crash when im playing a game on that drive it will bring up the blue screen and tell me to diable bios memory cache option i did this and it seems to have hepled with the crashing however i checked the error report and it says the dvd drive has a bad block. now for the second part of my question i have recently been told by several profesionals that windows home can cause serious problems with certain cd burners and that if i install windows xp pro it should clear all these problems up with the periphrial devices. however i have recently aquired several nasty virus form downloading on winmx and if i reinstall a new operating system albeit windows pro if the windows registry is corupted from these virsues is the new operating systems registry going to be corrupted as soon as i install WxpPro and do you think that my problems with my dvd rom and keyboard are caused by a virus that my new version of norton anti virus just doesnt pick up thanks to everyone that has answered my questions so far im new to this stite and appreciate the help thanks agian pip

The registry is specific to the operating system on installation. If you format the drive before installing Windows XP Pro, the viruses will be gone along with it.
If you're going to continue downloading things from peer-to-peer networks, you seriously need to invest in some antivirus software, keep it updated, and run it regularly (and use it to scan newly downloaded files BEFORE you open them).
The antivirus company TrendMicro offers free online virus scans (http://housecall.trendmicro.com). Before you attempt to remove any viruses from a Windows XP system (either Home or Pro), you need to disable the System Restore function.
It's doubtful that your problems with your DVD-ROM and your keyboard are caused by a virus. To make sure, go do the free virus scan I mentioned before and let us know if anything's been found.
