Hi. I'm having trouble getting onto the internet with my computer. I've tried all of the suggestions on windows98 troubleshooters. I've contacted my internet service provider and implemented their reccomended changes and done the checks. I've contacted my computer support, and still nothing. I'm not very technical, but I sure would appreciate it if someone could try to help me out.

What exactly is the nature of your problem? Do you have dial up or broadband? Are you on a network? Tell us exactly what happens when you try to get on the internet.

I don't really know the exact nature of my problem. I'm using a dial-up. when i dial up my internet connection it say dialing, makes the fax sounds then it goes into a busy signal and says unable to connect to remote computer. I've talked to my dial up provider and they don't know whats wrong because my user name and password are correct. My computer says the my modem is installed and working properly and I am not technical at all so i have no idea what to do. I really appreciate you tsking the time to try and help me.

THANK YOU. To all of you who were kind enough to try and help me. I had a professional take a look at it. He informed me that the problem had nothing to do with the Modem. The problem is a time sensitive program that redirects me the moment I get online to a Compaq site that I do not have the correct access codes to. He feels that by installing a new operating system it will fix the problem, because this is built into (apparently by the manufacturer) my computer. He also informed me being the owner of several Compaq computers that he gets all kinds of oddball problems similar to this. Has any other Compaq owner out there expirenced any wierd stuff like this?

lol.
compaq, hp, and various other "names" do this kind of crap. you should be able to remove or disable that lovely chunk of code without reinstalling, unless they actually modified the windows code, which is rather unlikely.

Blah red, try turely uninstalling a program like Gateways GoBack....lol you'll have a differnet view of the situation, lol.....talk about making a "dog" jump through hoops.

hehe. didnt say it was easy......

disabling would probably be simpler. a lot of people with comcraps dont have an actual OS, just restore disks. just trying to save him $150 (plus the shop fee) if he doesnt have it around.

Is your homepage set to the Compaq/HP website?

I have a Compaq and don't have this problem, but I have uninstalled just about all the OEM software that came with this thing.

Change your homepage in internet options and see if the problem persists. (start>settings>control panel>internet options>general tab)
