Re-appearing Win Desktop Icon

Does anyone know what this little desk top icon is that keeps coming up on my desk top after I have been on the net? Its a small box with a Win emblem in it with a ~ below it and a _ below that. If I delete it, it seems to come back after I been back on the net again. Sometimes right away and sometimes a few days later. If I leave it, I have never had two show up but I have no idea what it does or if it hurts anything. Its just aggrivating having it on my desk top. If I try to open it - Nothing. I also have friends that have the same issue (none of us know what to do about it). This is under XP and 98se. How do I get rid of it "FOREVER"? I do not recall ever having this come up in years past, just the last 12 to 18 months. Thx for any help or ideas. Oh, nothing seems to function different whether its there or not. Again, THX.

Have you run a virus scan? Adware scan? Spybot scan? If it only comes back when you are on the internet, it seems to me that it must be something that is connecting on the internet without your knowledge.

right click on it and select properties. if it doesnt look like something you want, google it. my guess is its just adware, viruses usually arent quite that obvious spybot should remove it if thats what it is. not that spyware always plays by the rules, but always make sure that install on demand is DISABLED in your internet options area.
