sounds like a short, but could be a few other things, like overheating cpu.

check the motherboard for any potential shorts, including awol thermal paste, mounting screws, anything in contact. you may want to remove the board from the case altogether.

also, recheck the thermal paste directions at www.arcticsilver.com and make sure your heatsink is fully in contact with the cpu.

what do you mean when you said it may be the thermal paste??

if you apply it incorrectly, you can get not only overheating, but it can also short the board if it makes contact, although thats quite rare.

I hope this helps! I had a similar problem, though at times I did get my computer to start. Read my post, maybe it will help. For me, it was right on the money, upgrading to a quality power supply even though the old power supply worked for me on another board in the past!

Again, read my post, it is titled "Help! No Post with Syntax SV266AD except when..."

Bottom line is I went and bought a quality power supply from Antec and I can not put into words what a difference there was!
I do not believe your CPU is overheating since you can't even get the computer to boot up, most overheating CPU's will give you problems as the computer runs for a while.

I've seen that problem with about three systems in the past. Make sure your IDE cables are pushed in all the way and not backwards (if the tips don't have the handy "can't-go-wrong" notches).

Like Redwench said, look for any miscellaneous items in between the mobo and the case. If there is something like a screw back there (I've seen it happen before), it'll cause a very similar problem to what you're describing.

And try different stuff with your RAM. Move it to a different slot, or borrow some from a friend to see if it works then. You can also try your RAM in someone else's system just to make sure it's good.

Basically, just eliminate every possibility. Try unhooking all your drives and taking out any sound or ethernet cards.

Let us know how it goes!

I have had a case that was almost the same, when i trie to turn the system on, nothing happend. Then i unplugged the atx power cable from the motherboard and put it back in, and it worked just fine.

Maybe loose connection
