internet explorer freezes

lately this problem is getting worse. about 50% of the time i open an ie page, it will lock up. ctrl-alt-del will show it is not responding, and i have to keep going through this till a page finaly opens. i am not an expert on modem settings but i think they are right, i have reinstalled a newer driver, etc.
anyone heard of this problem?
in fact it happened just now and i had to retype this entire post.
other strange things: also lately windows will refuse to close these pages, leaving them on the screen, when i ctrl-alt-del and end it, the ctrl-alt-del box remains on the screen for instance, until i have so many multiple things on the screen that i am so disgusted i just turn the computer off.
if i remember correctly, i began having this issue after installing my new graphics sound/cards and my new hard drive, all on the same day.
however, prior to that windows would lock up constantly in other manners.
i have:
win me
lucent winmodem
via p4pb 400 mobo with celeron 2.4 gig
geforece 8x agp 5200
sb live 5.1 soundcard

when was the last time you ran scandisk and defrag? how often do you reboot? did you reinstall ie?

Posted by: heyzeus2

i run scandisk and defrag all the time, at least once a week anyway. i have redownloaded and reinstalled ie several times.
i reboot everytime the computer locks up, which can be 1-5 times an hour. i dont usualy reboot when ie freezes because i can stop the frozen process in the device manager.
thanks for your help.

Have you scanned for viruses/adware/spyware recently?

If you don't have an antivirus program, try a free online scan from here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Here are two good anti adware/spyware programs:

Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot: Search and Destroy - http://security.kolla.de

thanks! i use both of those already, great programs.
i also have panda antivirus installed.

Just curious... have you tried using a different browser, such as Mozilla? If you've tried using a different browser (I'm sure you can manage if you like IE ) and this lockup problem has persisted, then most likely the problem has nothing to do with Internet Explorer and/or Windows itself.

just use a different browser, i have the same problem with my IE also and since it cant be uninstalled i jsut switched to Mizilla.

oh, geez. i never thought of that. never heard of mozilla either. i'll look into it.
thanks!

make sure you run windows update, theyre always fixing something....

i ran a memtest and found no errors, but i wanted to mention that, after doing a number of things, my windows is running much better. i am still waiting for it to crash today, but so far so good.
i think the culprit was my 4 in 1 drivers, i rolled back to a much older version, and saw improvements right away.
as far as the internet explorer, belive it or not i think my sound card was affecting it. for instance, when running a repair on internet explorer the sb live splash screen would pop up causing a freeze. wierd cause this only pops up prior to windows start. i removed the splash screen program and reinstalled sound drivers. um, so far so good.
