Internet Explorer Problem?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What does the following message mean:

"Opening page about:blank" ? If this message appears, does that mean that there is a problem with Internet Explorer?

When are you getting that message, exactly?

If your home page keeps coming up as that and/or you're getting pop-ups that say it, most likely you've got some adware/spyware programs installed. You should download, install, update and run the following two anti-adware/spyware programs if you haven't already:

Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot: Search and Destroy - http://security.kolla.de

Hi NegotiatorSmith,

Re: Opening Page about: Blank

Thank you so much for your help... I installed the ad-aware program that you recommended and the problem no longer exist.

The computer with the problem belonged to my mother and the words 'opening Page about: Blank' started to appear at the bottom left-hand corner of her status bar and sometimes when it appeared, it would tell her that 'Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close' and she would then have to shut down.

Sometimes when she went into a web site the words 'opening page about: blank' would come up first then the web site would open. I ran ad-aware program on her computer and everything is now O.K.

My mom has the Alexa toolbar installed on her computer. Could this be the problem? She had it installed for sometime now and she never had the problem before now.

There was a lot of spyware when I ran the ad-aware software. It would seem that spyware/ad-aware were causing the problem.

I did not run the 'Search and Destroy' software since I was concerned about running a program that I did not know about. I knew about ad-aware since I use it on my computer and, since my mom no longer has the problem (after running ad-aware), I did not run it.

Your help was greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards.

Spybot Search and Destroy is like Ad-Aware, but it tends to detect slightly different things and be updated more often. It also has an 'immunize' function that makes it harder for spyware and adware to get onto your computer in the first place.

I highly recommend it.

alexa is the source of the problem. its blocked and killed by every antispyware program out there.
