i am trying to reformat my pc (windows me) and i have found a site to help me. i have followed each step carefully without any problem until i have restarted it and i am supposed to type a:format c: and then hit enter it keeps saying that "format not supported on drive c:
format terminated
please help !

So you made a bootdisk, inserted it into drive A, put your WinME CD in the CD-ROM drive, rebooted and typed format C: at the A:\ prompt?
Your command line should look like this:
A:\format C:
In case what I just said made no sense to you, here's a good website with easy instructions on how to make a bootdisk, fdisk your drive, and reinstall ME.

according to the site i am using
http://web.archive.org/web/20030703...p00/210900.html
i am only supposed to have the floppy disk in at this point, otherwise everything you mentioned is correct

The site you linked to didn't say anything about doing an fdisk. Try that.

thank you for your response. yes, i have been searching everywhere on google and seen that suggestion. thank you
by the way what does that do. i cant mess up anything can i?

i typed fdisk and it told me that i have a disk larger than 512 mb............etc and asked if i wanted to enable large disk support? i typed yes and and now i have the options 1. create dos partition or logical dos drive 2. set active parition. 3.delete partition or logical dos 4. display partition infornmation

fdisk helps you manage partitions on the drive. If you're formatting your drive, then there's nothing you can mess up, since you're about to wipe the drive anyway.
You want to display partition information. If you have more than one partition, delete all partitions except for one. Then set that as the active partition. Then format.

When you are in FDISK,
1. press 4 and look at what partitions you have one the disk. Probably its one, C drive NTFS. (crap, I think that's what ME uses?)
in any case...
2. hit esc, then press 3 "Delete partition or logical drive"
3. your next screen gives you 4 options. If it is an NTFS drive, you want to choose option 4 "delete non DOS partition"
----it will ask you if you are sure, and to enter the volume lable, ----which is clearly shown on the screen.
4. You will go back to the first screen, now you need to create a logical DOS partition. DON'T EXIT OR RESTART BEFORE YOU DO THIS!
5. Should go through the hard disk integrity thing and tell you to enter a drive volume, and also what to do next, or give you the option to restart your machine. Make sure you have your restore disc in the CD when you reboot.
Hope this helps. If you need anything else, I would recommend this site, but keep in mind this is for FAT32 systems, so some may not apply

See ya

i am at step 4 on the above directions. do i need to 1.create primary dos partition or 3. create logical dos drives in the extended dos partition?
Posted by: RBK25
think i got it figured out sorry

i am pretty sure that i have completed all the steps successfully up until the windows me installation. it says to type "d:setup" (it now says that my cdrom drive is e so i am typing "e:setup") with the os disk in the cdrom. i have tried both e and d and i still get the message bad command or file name. is this because i might have a partition. if so do i have to format d, as i said above my cdrom is now drive e

Just put the ME CD in the drive and reboot your computer. Windows will take over from there.

that command is for win98. for the higher OS, you have to boot from the OS cd.

when i put disc 2 version me rev. 1.1 of the system restoration kit, and restart the computer the goback diallog box comes up and athe hit space bar to repair problems comes up and just repeats itslef until i hit spacebar. go back is disabled.

huh?

are you saying you do NOT have a Windows ME disk?
Posted by: Shalome
System restoration kit? Not an actual Windows ME Operating System disc??
Posted by: RBK25
all that i have is the gateway system restoration kit. it sayst that the cd contains Operating system restoration program so i figured that it is the one that i want. i also searched on the gateway support site and found this site to assist me with this cd but still nothing
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWA...750978807.shtml
i tried one of my friends reinstallation of window millinium and it started to work until is mentioned something about that version of mellinium cant install on this computer. possibly because it was designed for a dell.

A system restore disk is meant to repair an installation of ME, not make an entirely new one.
If you've wiped your drive, looks like you need to go buy a copy of an operating system.
For the love of all that's holy, though, don't get ME again. Microsoft is ending support for that buggy piece of crap OS.

i definitely wont get ME again. but now that i have screwed my computer up so bad, how can i tell if my specs will run an upgrade (XP pro). in other words what all do i need to know and how would i find it on my computer at this stage?
thank you for all your help so far
Posted by: Shalome
You can't get an "upgrade" version if you've wiped your drive. An upgrade requires a working stable older version of an operating system to be installed on top of. If you have nothing on your drive, you can't upgrade it.
You need to buy a full version of Windows XP Pro, if that's the operating system you're looking for. The one labelled "Upgrade" will NOT work.
If your system came with ME installed, then it can most likely handle XP. Here are the requirements for XP Pro:
PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
This is very, very similar to the requirements for ME. Look up the model number of your computer to see what hardware it has.

thank you very much. hopefully i can get everything figured out.
once again i appreciate everything

Dude, don't worry about it too much. I've wiped my hard drive a million times. You'll figure it out! (course its not so easy these days as it used to be). All you need (probably) is a copy of XP. Well, not a copy, like a licensed version and such. hahah. yeah... (I meant that of course).

you can purchase the oem version of xp online. just make sure you do so from a reputable large merchant. itll be about half the price of the retail version.
