SATA XP install

Hey again, I just built a new computer with a SATA 80 gig in it, but when I go to install windows from the cd, it says that there are no hard drives. This is my first time using SATA, so I don;t know how to deal with it...will I have to put in a standard IDE drive, install windows on that and then install it on the SATA?
Thanks in advance

Actually, I think I narrowed the problem down: it won't read the floppy. The light stays on all the time. I have the standard IDE floppy cable that came with the mobo. When I unplug the IDE, the floppy's light goes off. (obviously, it also goes off when I unplug the power as well)
The drive does work in my other pc, so I know it's good.
So this went from a SATA problem to a floppy problem. Please help!
Thanks again

check in the bios to make sure the new sata drive/controller isnt on the same irq as the floppy. also, see if you can flip the floppy cable over
sata drives usually require an installation of drivers during the windows installation (which i assume is why youre fooling with the floppy). you might be able to burn them to a cd and try reading from a cd drive.

I checked the IRQ, it's different than the floppy. And my floppy is the type that the cable can only be inserted one way. I'll try the cd though, thanks.

Ok, since my last post I have:
tried copying the files to a cd. this didn't work, XP requires the files to be on a floppy.
installed a working hard drive from another pc. it would boot, until the XP screen was supposed to come up, at which point I would get a BSOD for a fraction of a second, then it would reboot.
swapped floppy drives. no effect.
swapped cable. no effect.
swapped cable and floppy. no effect.
swapped cable and floppy, and installed the cable upside-down in the new floppy. no effect.
swapped cable and floppy, put floppy on slave part of cable, upside-down. (only floppy cable I ever saw with 3 connections, including mobo) Now it will read my floppy.
however, it now says that the drivers are causing an unexpected error (512 if that means anything to you) and tells me to press a key to continue. I do so, and it just loops me back to the driver install screen.
I'm running out of options

shotgun.
try grabbing the drivers from online, on the offchance its just a corrupted disk. you can also give this a whirl, although how useful that is, i dont know.
xp on another drive not working is expected, so doesnt mean anything.

you have no idea just how ludicrous that sounds. spare me from finicky hardware.

Ok, got the drivers from online, put them on a floppy, windows install got them, so now my SATA is up and running. Thanks again, it was driving me crazy.
But now, when I install windows off my cd drive, it will go through most of it with no problems, but there are two places where it says it needs files from the I386 folder of the cd. I open the browser to look for the I386 folder, and it can't see the cd drive that it was just installing from. It will finish the install, but then after I boot up XP, there are several parts of the OS not working (understandably). These include standard networking functions, and start menu functions. I tried copying the I386 folder from the cd to the HD, then reinstalling XP, but when it says it needs the files from said folder, I go to it and they aren't in there.
So I think I'll just go buy a 20gig IDE drive and then use my SATA for games and storage. Either that, or get the shotgun.
Oh, and sorry for putting all the floppy stuff on there, I thought it might be important...guess it was just an annoyance.
Thanks again for the help!

nah, that was funny. i like funny.
er, anyway, your hard drive isnt the issue now. thats being recognized and running fine. you now have a windows problem.......

...Well, I copied the I386 folder to the HD using copy and paste...would going through the registry make a difference?
But are you sure it's a windows problem? It seems to me that it could also be a cd problem, because when I click "browse" to find the I386 folder on the cd drive, it doesn't see the drive. But then again, it's recognized in the BIOS, so yeah, I guess it makes sense that it would be windows.
glad you though it was funny. I guess I took your comment "spare me from finicky hardware" wrong. my bad.

you could have all sorts of things wrong, including the motherboard. but it sounds like the hard drive is working fine. its probably windows, no guarantee though.
dont ask me if a registry change would help. most of the results i turned up were for networks, or just suggested the copy/paste thing. since you dont have stuff youre attached to on the drive, i figure you wont mind fooling around in the registry

True, the worst thing that could happen is I would just have to re-format...for the 15th or so time.
